to ReUp215 Director Lauren Pointer and Vincent Hughes celebrating the recent VIP and BOOST grant rewarded awards! ReUp215 is a Turning Points program working to provide teens with previous criminal justice involvement, the opportunity for a fresh start. This funding will help us create even more pathways for young people in Philadelphia to rewrite their stories.

In recognition of National Foster Care Awareness Month, we are shining a light on two programs, LifeSet and Family Finding, that support young people in foster care as they work toward brighter, more stable futures.

Every young person in foster care has a story still being written. No matter how that story began, our goal is to ensure the next chapter is defined by hope, strength, resilience, and a true sense of belonging. We do this by providing the tools, relationships, and support that young people need to reimagine what is possible for their lives.

Over 60 young people from our older youth programs participated in our Older Youth Employment Summit, and the energy in the room was inspiring. Our team believes employment support must be well-rounded, creative, and innovative, and this summit brought that belief to life.

This experience was about more than helping young people find a job. It was about preparing them to walk through the door with confidence, recognize opportunities that excite them, and thrive once they get there.

The day included virtual reality simulations of career pathways, workshops on résumé building and job retention, trade demonstrations from community partners highlighting the possibilities within their fields, support with working papers, and so much more.

Thank you to all of our community partners who made this summit possible, and a special thank you to NJM Insurance Group for sponsoring lunch and ensuring our young people were nourished in every sense of the word.

It’s National Volunteer Week! This week, we’re celebrating the people and companies who give their time, energy, and heart to support the families we serve. Volunteers are essential to our work. Thank you for showing up for our mission year-round!

And here's a bonus: volunteering is good for you too. According to Mayo Clinic, it benefits both mental and physical health, building connection and a sense of purpose. Giving back feels good for a reason!

For everyone who is celebrating this week, Happy Passover, Happy Easter, and Happy Spring!

"Social Work chose me."

For so many in this field, that sentiment rings true. Social work is more than a profession, it’s a commitment and a calling.

Over the past few weeks, our staff have shared what social work means to them: it’s complex, deeply connective, rooted in the space between potential and opportunity, and centered on helping people help themselves.

As we close out National Social Work Month, we’re reminded just how vital this work is, and how proud we are to be part of it.

As we close out National Social Work Month, we’re shining the spotlight on an international pioneer with local roots, Dr. Joe Crumbley.

Dr. Crumbley is a global expert in kinship care. Kinship care is a caregiving arrangement in which children are raised by relatives or close family friends when their biological parents cannot care for them. Dr. Joe leads trainings and advises on child welfare across the globe: from China to New Zealand to Canada to right here in Philadelphia. At Turning Points, we have had the immense privilege of having him as part of our story.

"Social work is not just a job, it's a commitment." Laniyah, a former LifeSet participant and now Administrative Assistant for our diversion program ReUp215, knows this to be true on multiple levels. As someone who has been part of both receiving and providing social work services, she wants people to know that social workers are not just giving resources, they are there to face the challenges right alongside you.

Many of our staff went into social work because of their lived experience, just like Damon, the Anti-Violence Case Manager and Coordinator for BIPS, our prevention program. This not only makes our staff more compassionate advocates, but effective at what they do. For Damon, his own experience is a strength that helps him connect to the youth he serves.
