Philadelphia is having a conversation about economic mobility - and it’s about time.

Last week, leaders gathered at the Xiente Prosperity Breakfast to ask the hard questions: What does it take to move a family from survival to stability to opportunity? What role do guaranteed income, affordable housing, and financial coaching really play? And who needs to be at the table to make it happen?

On June 4th, Xiente hosted our Prosperity Breakfast and Philadelphia showed up.

120 leaders from across the city’s corporate, philanthropic, nonprofit, and civic sectors gathered at Billy Penn Studios for one honest conversation: What does it truly take to move families from stability to mobility?

Not just in theory. In practice.

Our moderator, Sarah Glover of WHYY, guided a panel of practitioners who have been doing this work on the ground - Félix Quiñones (Xiente), Soneyet Muhammad (Episcopal Community Services), Olivia Montana (South Hills Interfaith Movement), and Brendan Perry (Catholic Charities Fort Worth).

What we heard stayed with us:

→ Stability and mobility are not the same thing. Too many systems are designed to keep families afloat - not to move them forward.
→ Coaching is not case management. Long-term mobility requires a fundamentally different relationship between organizations and the families they serve.
→ No single program, sector, or organization gets families to economic mobility alone. It takes alignment and it takes everyone at the table.

The morning was made possible by our Prosperity Innovation Investor, Truist Financial, whose commitment to economic mobility and community investment brought this vision to life.

For 40+ years, Xiente has been disrupting intergenerational poverty in North Philadelphia, connecting families to housing, education, workforce development, and financial coaching. The Prosperity Breakfast Series exists to bring the leaders who can accelerate that work into the same room.
