Prof. Antonio Giordano returns to the Terra dei Fuochi issue with an article published in Il Mattino, drawing attention to an uncomfortable truth: the data was there. For years.

Yet institutional delays, fragmented communications and a tendency to downplay the problem postponed concrete action, while the contamination of water, soil and food supply chains continued unchecked.

Health cannot be separated from the environment.

Cancers are no longer just a disease of advanced age. They increasingly affect young adults too. In particular, six types of cancer are rising under age 50: breast, colorectal, endometrial, kidney, thyroid, and certain leukemias. The most alarming data concerns colorectal cancer, which is growing more rapidly precisely among the youngest.

The causes? Lifestyles, diet, obesity, chronic inflammation. But also something broader: the "exposome," that is, the totality of environmental and behavioral exposures that accompany each of us from the start of life.

Research is examining the role of the gut microbiota, the impact of widespread environmental chemicals, hormonal and social changes.
