It feels good to Celebrate our Hotel Contract Victories this summer during the World Cup here in Philly. 9 Hotels got settled during our strike and deadline. We wanna thank Councilmember's Isaiah Thomas, Nina Ahmad, and Katherine Gillmore Richardson for stopping by and Celebrating with us. We knocked the doors and collected the signatures, and now paid sick time is headed to the ballot in Allentown! 🎉

UNITE HERE Local 274 partnered with Make the Road Pennsylvania 🦋 to gather the 4000+ signatures that moved this initiative forward. This November, Allentown voters will have the chance to make 9 days of paid sick time a reality for workers across the city, so getting sick doesn’t have to mean losing a paycheck or risking your job. 🗳️

Workers at the Philadelphia International Airport restaurants Sabrina’s Cafe, Bud & Marilyn’s, Good Luck Bar & Restaurant, Chick-fil-A, and Insomnia Cookies are forming a union and joining UNITE HERE Local 274.

These five restaurants are operated by Washington, DC-based restaurateur Hakan Ilhan. These workers constitute the second-largest group of airport concessions workers at PHL and the largest group of non-union concessions workers.

Workers say Ilhan’s restaurants do not offer health insurance to employees and many are uninsured.

“I haven’t taken a sick day in over two years,” says Bud & Marilyn’s bartender Martina Lyons. “I’ve worked at the airport for over 20 years, and I don’t have health insurance. We deserve better.”

Our partners at UNITE HERE Worker Training Center have announced enrollment for their Fall Culinary Apprenticeship cohort!
This is a FREE 8-week intensive training to enhance your culinary skills in a fully equipped commercial sized kitchen.
Students who successfully complete the training will be connected to union-wage jobs with job protection at the end of the program.

✅ If you’re fluent in English (with math and reading skills at a 10th grade level), and
✅ You are at least 18 years of age, a new career is waiting!
