Black Voters Matter campaign targets West Philadelphia turnout

About 60 volunteers gathered at the New Options More Opportunities (NOMO WEST) Foundation’s TOM REID VILLAGE office on 4077 Lancaster Ave.
Rickey Duncan Rickey Duncan , CEO and executive director of the NOMO Foundation NoMo Inc. NEW OPTIONS MORE OPPORTUNITIES , said the organization was founded by Dr. Tom Reid to support families affected by violence.
“Dr. Reid handed it over to me in 2015, and I’ve been leading it ever since,” Duncan said. “Today, we have locations in West, North and South Philadelphia.”
Duncan said civic participation is essential regardless of a person’s interest in politics.
“Whether or not you want to be a part of politics, politics is going to be a part of you,” he said. “At the end of the day, we want to make sure our Black and Brown communities are represented.”
He said NOMO’s role is to educate residents about voting rather than advocate for any particular candidate.
“We let people know the importance of getting informed and deciding for themselves who they want to support,” Duncan said.
The event also created paid opportunities for young adults ages 18 to 24 to participate in paid voter outreach efforts.
“We usually work with young people between 11 and 24, and one of our goals is breaking intergenerational cycles and creating generational wealth,” Duncan said. “Today, they’ll be knocking on doors, making phone calls and distributing information about the importance of voting.”
While volunteers distributed voter information, Duncan noted that NOMO was originally established as a violence prevention organization.
“Our program focuses on workforce development, trauma-informed care, vocational training and mental health awareness,” he said. “We also offer financial literacy, mentoring, academic support and housing assistance. We take a holistic approach to helping communities thrive.”
