🌍 Did you know a movement for justice reached from North Philly all the way to South Africa?
Episode 3 of Legacy Lessons with Ms. , Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Leon H. Sullivan Charitable Trust, explores how Reverend Dr. Leon H. Sullivan used his seat on the General Motors Board of Directors to challenge Apartheid in South Africa through what became known as the Sullivan Principles.
After becoming the first Black member of General Motors’ Board of Directors, Dr. Sullivan challenged corporations to take a stand against the inhumane conditions of Apartheid.
Dr. Sullivan believed businesses had a responsibility to stand for human dignity and equality — not just profit. His principles pushed companies to rethink their role in injustice and became part of the international pressure that led to the end of Apartheid, and ultimately the freedom of Nelson Mandela after 27 long years.
🌍 From Philadelphia to South Africa, his impact reminds us that economic power can also be a force for justice.
