in 1944, ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข and her crew crossed the equator, prompting a Crossing the Line Ceremony.

For centuries, the Crossing the Line ceremony has been performed to commemorate a sailorโ€™s first time crossing the equator. The ritual often includes someone dressed up as King Neptune, as well as various other challenges for the sailors to complete. Since ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข is a submarine, the ceremony was done while she was submerged, and when she resurfaced, she had a โ€œcrew full of shellbacks,โ€ meaning that all the crew on board had crossed the equator.

Independence Seaport Museum respectfully acknowledges that it is situated on ๐˜“๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ, the ancestral homelands of the Lenape peoples.

Whether ancestral, present-day, or in the future, many Lenape peoples still call this region, which embraces the Delaware River, home. The Lenape and their ancestors along the river is well documented in archaeology, community knowledge, and the arts, among other forms of historical records. Here are two hand-colored lithographs based on the original paintings by Gustavus Hesselius. The portraits depict Lenape Chiefs Tish-Co-Han and Lap-Pa-Win-Soe, respectively. Both of these individuals were leaders in their communities and chosen by the artist to be in a series of paintings similar to these portraits from our collection. [2023.009]
