A little know how for our gardeners.

The container you choose affects root health, soil temperature, and water retention. Same tomato, four containers, dramatically different results.

PLASTIC NURSERY POT
❌ Traps heat (130°F+ in July). Roots hit the wall and circle, eventually strangling the plant. Cheap to buy, expensive in lost yield. Fine for starting seeds, wrong for growing to harvest.

FABRIC GROW BAG
✔ Air-prunes roots at the edges, forcing them to branch instead of circle. Runs 15-20°F cooler than plastic in summer. Drains well, never waterlogged. Best choice for tomatoes, peppers, and squash.

TERRACOTTA
⚠️ Wicks moisture through porous walls—great for herbs that hate wet feet, bad for heavy drinkers like tomatoes. Looks beautiful, but requires 2× more watering in summer. Match to the crop.

5-GALLON BUCKET
⚠️ Conducts heat fast—scorching in afternoon sun, cold at night. Drill drainage holes. Paint white or wrap with burlap to insulate. Costs nothing but needs management.

ROOT COMPARISON:
Plastic = circling, matted, strangled
Fabric = branching, air-pruned, healthy
Terracotta = moderate but dry edges
Bucket = decent if temperature-managed

THE MATCH:
Heavy drinkers (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers) → fabric grow bags
Drought lovers (herbs, succulents) → terracotta
Budget + insulation hack → white bucket with holes
Temporary staging only → plastic nursery pot

Root health is plant health. The container decides before you ever add fertilizer.

Gout is a common, painful form of inflammatory arthritis caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia), which forms needle-like crystals in joints, often the big toe. Symptoms include sudden, severe attacks of joint pain, swelling, and redness. The key chemical that causes it is Purine. Here is a list of foods to avoid (High Purine) and recommended (Low Purine) foods. Hint: Your garden is your friend.

A low purine diet helps prevent and manage gout by reducing uric acid in your bloodstream.
