Earlier this week, we celebrated the completion of a $27 million renovation at Francis J. Myers Rec. Center, which included renovations that better serve the community.

Project highlights incudes:
- New playgrounds and spray ground
- New community garden
- New walkways, site furniture, & site lighting
- Repair and replacement of existing site fencing, stone retaining walls, asphalt driveways
- New windows and doors
- New lobby, kitchen, community room, computer room, staff offices, and flexible classroom spaces
- New regulation-size basketball gymnasium
- New HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems
- ADA upgrades, including a new four-stop elevator
- New security, IT, and AV systems
- New fire alarm and fire protection systems
- LEED Gold certification, with full building electrification and energy-efficient, sustainable systems throughout

This transformation creates a safe, modern place for children and families to play and gather. Being over 100 years old, Francis J. Myers represents a piece of the neighborhoods history, and its has been shaped and sustained by generations of Southwest Philadelphia residents.

Yesterday, we cut the ribbon at Francis J. Myers Rec. Center, celebrating the completion of the $27 million renovation.

After hearing from elected and local leaders it was clear that Francis J. Myers is more than just a recreation center, it's the heartbeat of the surrounding community. And this project happened because, just like the ribbon cutting, the community showed up and spoke up.

A big shout out to Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, , , Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, Deputy Mayor Vanessa Garrett-Harley, , the .phl staff, and , for all of the work and advocacy done on the project to make sure that the community received the recreation center that they deserve.

Earlier this week, we had a great time with the team, showing them the current state of Carousel House and all of the planned renovations and additions to the site. Once completed, the project will double the facility's square footage and continue its legacy as a pioneering recreation center for people with disabilities while also serving the East and West Parkside communities, creating a universally accessible space that welcomes everyone.

We were also joined by the project's architect , who worked with the communities and leaders that this facility will serve to develop the design for the new space.

Hands-on training that also helps improve the community?

Rebuild Trade Academy graduates, including Tammy McDonnell, got hands-on training where they built important skills and worked on portions of sidewalks at Jacobs Playground in Northeast Philadelphia.

Our Cement Masons & Plasterers Academy, held in partnership with Cement Masons and Plasterers Local 592, is creating new opportunities for residents to pursue family-sustaining careers in the skilled trades and represents a direct investment in both workforce development and community improvement.

Next time you are at a public space, think about the skilled tradespeople, like Tammy, who might have had a helping hand building it!

Our Ironworker Academy is reaching new heights as our 2026 class learns to climb steel poles.

The Ironworker Academy is a four-week hands-on program that connects participants directly with union apprenticeships and family-sustaining careers. We are excited to see where the program will take them!

Construction is moving on Happy Hollows!

This $8.6 million renovation will deliver a full roof replacement, ADA upgrades, a new playground and sprayground, modernized interior spaces, safety enhancements, and digital access improvements.

Crews are already nearly halfway through the renovation and are currently working on:
-Electrical service installation
- Playground paving
-Roof & gutter replacement

After that, crews will be working on completing the project, and the community will be able to enjoy one of the oldest recreation centers in Philadelphia once again!

The basketball gym is open during construction.

Whether it was dominating the football field, tennis courts, or even the radio, Johnny Sample was always able to reinvent himself and become great at anything he put his mind to.

With that spirit in mind, our renovations to Johnny Sample (Cobbs Creek) Rec. Center reinvented the space as a premier rec center for all of the community to enjoy.

Our renovations put the King in the Kingsessing Rec. Center.

The ribbon cutting in April showcased the improvement on the 9.2 ace. site that included:

- New playground equipment
-A pool
- New sports field
- New basketball and tennis courts
- Updated auditorium
-Gymnasium
- Weight room
-Multipurpose spaces
- And a public computing center
