Tract Association of Friends

Tract Association of Friends We are an association of members of the Society of Friends with a special sense of unity in the concern for distribution of Quaker literature.

The Tract Association of Friends was founded in Philadelphia in 1816 to provide literature reflecting principles of the Religious Society of Friends: the mode and manner of worship, and the testimony of faith espoused by George Fox and William Penn, among others. The Tract Association has continued to provide small leaflets, booklets and books to Friends and those of like mind free or at cost. Boa

rd members represent several Yearly Meetings and share a concern that Friends’ principles be presented for the education of Friends and other denominations. Today, this ideal continues for tracts and children’s tracts; we try to keep longer publications at cost. The Tract Association of Friends emphasizes the inward and personal experience of the Spirit of the Living Christ, our Inward Teacher. Tracts and books presented are chosen to reflect these experiences through writings of the past and present. Occasionally, the Tract Association has published tracts in other languages, and has also provided textbooks and other materials reflecting Friends’ witness. We hope to provide links to Spanish translations of our publications.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Marjorie Ewbank on Fifth Month, 18th. Marjorie was Clerk of the Tract Association for many years, only stepping down a few weeks before she died. She was 104. She is in the attached picture (on the left) doing what she loved and was good at. That is, immersed in the work of the Tract Association with other Friends.

She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

More information will be provided as it becomes known.

The 12th of First Month was a rainy winter day. Friends gathered at 1501 Cherry Street in the Lucrecia Mott Room for the work of the Tract Association. It was a profitable meeting. We examined financial and distribution reports, discussed use of the page and reviewed a submission for the upcoming publication of marriages under the care of Friends.

We invite friends to visit us at future meetings. Dates, times and locations will be published in Events on our page.

Friends
by William Bacon Evans (http://web.tricolib.brynmawr.edu/speccoll/dictionary/index.php/EVANS,_William_Bacon,_1875-1964)

AND ye who bear the precious name of Friends,
Boast not to see the Master’s whole design,
Who would be wise may wisdom’s claim resign,
So far God’s plan our simple wit transcends.
No cumbrous load the gospel yoke subtends,
Of many branches is the heavenly vine
Who tastes God’s love is careless to define,
A little child looks up and comprehends.
From self-indulgence keep your thought unstained,
As trusted stewards observe your Master’s will,
Judge no man but by wisdom from above.
In every nerve be honesty engrained,
So shall ye have your maiden virtue still
As heaven enfolds the earth in arms of love.

William Bacon Evans (July 27, 1875 - February 25, 1964) was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of William and Rebecca (Carter) Evans, brother of Alice, Ruth, Grace, Charles.

What is a tract? The question brings to mind those little pieces of paper that proselytizing fundamentalists press into our hands. They invariably contain descriptions of hellfire and damnation that are in store for those who do not agree with a particular Christian theology. This sort of medium does not seem to conform with the manner of Friends. But the medium is not responsible for the message, or more importantly, the spirit of the message. For years Quakers have used tracts to present OUR understanding of God. Many meeting houses have small tables near their entrance containing a variety of tracts. These small essays attempt to explain some aspect of Quakerism. This is a good thing since it is often hard to precisely describe Friends ways to visitors in a short amount of time.

The Tract Association of Friends is one of several organizations that publish Quaker Tracts. It is also known for publishing a yearly Friends Calendar that contains quotes from scripture and Friends writings. All of the tracts are available on the website www.tractassocation.org (click on “Learn More” on this page).

The Tract Association will be posting tracts (or links to tracts) on this page from time to time. These may be new tracts, or a revisit of old favorites. “Like” or “Follow” us to get updates.
