Did you know that Camp OFLA is an advocacy project of The Ohio World Language Association - OWLA?

Our team of teachers at camp are all members, board members, and even past presidents of OWLA (formerly OFLA and a few other names over its many years helping language teachers) and the OWLA board hosts camp, conferences, workshops, trainings, social events, craft classes, and I could literally fill your screen with all of the opportunities being a member opens you up to, but it takes a village to keep this running.

Committees are low stakes ways to dip your toes into org work without committing to a membership or joining a board. If these committees sound like something you'd be interested in helping with, reach out!

Language teachers: you should really become a member. It's $55 for the year, and you either already have spent or you're about to spend more than that on TPT lessons that we'll just give you for free if you join.

Parents: check in with your camper's language teacher to see if they're a member. Let them know that a portion of their membership dues go to support keeping camp affordable for our campers!

We have one more committee looking for members! Reach out to Dia Mixon at [email protected] if you are interested!

Day 5 was very eventful. After our campers took a written and verbal exit exam, we had plenty of time to enjoy activity field. Our campers showed amazing courage as they; proved their language skills, zip lined through the woods, and climbed to the top of a tall rock wall ringing a bell of accomplishment.

Later, PHOC staff put on a show while introducing us to their pony Dolly! 🐴 thanks Pleasant Hill Outdoor Camp ! Dolly was very calm and let us all pet her smooth fur.

That evening we held the famous international night market. More photos to come.

Day 3 in the books! In class our campers have been learning about winter markets and using language regarding winter. In the evening, we had noodle night, where they learned about Asian table manners. Including how to use chop sticks, while getting some practice with yummy ramen.

Every day at camp is a new adventure as our students learn, play, and discover the joy of connecting across cultures. 🌏🇰🇷🇫🇷🇨🇳🇪🇸

Day 2. Learning a new language is even more fun with friends! 🌎✨

Our campers are building confidence, making memories, and exploring world cultures one word at a time.

Yesterday was day 4 and it was a great one. We continued our curriculum which includes listening, speaking, reading and writing in camper’s chosen language. Our teachers also do a great job of exposing everyone to culture through taste, by cooking foods from their cultures 😋

Lastly, we ended the night with a favorite tradition: the famous game “Hollywood Squares”. In this game we host cultural icons to test their knowledge of world trivia.

When experiencing content with tangible, hands on experiences, students can make stronger connections to material, and have a better foundational knowledge.
