🚨 Northwest Indiana Still Recovering From Severe Storms
More than a week after powerful storms tore through Northwest Indiana, thousands of families are still waiting for their power to be restored.
The August 11 storms brought destructive winds, downed trees and widespread damage to the electrical infrastructure. At one point, approximately 300,000 customers were without power.
As of the latest reports, approximately 68,000 NIPSCO customers remain without electricity, with the majority of those outages in Lake County. Communities including Gary, Hammond, Schererville, Highland, Munster, Dyer and St. John have been among those impacted.
Some residents have now been without power for more than a week, while others who recently had service restored have experienced additional outages as damaged infrastructure continues to cause problems.
For some areas of Gary, full restoration may not happen until August 25 as crews work to replace hundreds of damaged utility and transmission poles.
💔 Being without electricity for this long affects far more than just the lights. Families are dealing with spoiled food, loss of air conditioning, difficulty charging phones and other essential devices, and the challenges that come with trying to get through day after day without reliable power.
