Too Young to Wed is a nonprofit providing visual evidence of the human rights challenges faced by girls and women around the world. Using the power of visual storytelling, Too Young To Wed aims to protect girls rights and end child marriage worldwide. In many societies, marriage is a celebrated institution signifying a union between two adults and the beginning of their future together. Worldwide,

many brides are still children, not even teenagers. So young are some girls that they hold onto their toys during the wedding ceremony. Usually these girls become mothers in their early teens, while they are still children themselves. The practice can result in profound negative consequences for the girls, their families and their entire communities. Please join us in our fight to protect girls' rights and end child marriage.

Back to school isn’t always a classroom. Sometimes it’s a keyboard, for the first time, at any age, and a reason to stay long enough to finish. Share the campaign. Support a girl today.

Nearly 1 in 4 young women in India marry before 18. About a third of the world’s child brides live in India. And even for girls who stay enrolled, only about half complete upper secondary school nationally.

Getting a girl into school is only half the job. Keeping her there long enough to finish is the other half.

In Rajasthan, female literacy in some communities remains below 10 percent. This year, TYTW’s program reached 368 girls directly. Fifty gained digital literacy and computer skills for the first time. The program was budgeted for six months. The community asked us to stay for ten, and we did.

122 million girls are out of school worldwide. Across the world, girls are out of school for different reasons, from climate change and conflict to gender apartheid that restricts their rights.

But through our work in some of the most fragile contexts, we’ve seen that change is possible: across our programs 562,273 days of learning and 99.88% of girls protected from child marriage. For the next two weeks, we’re sharing their stories as part of _Back to School, Everywhere_, and inviting you to be part of the movement.

August 15 marks five years since the Taliban returned to power, and five years of totalizing oppression s on the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.

Today, organizations working alongside Afghan women are speaking with a shared voice. Over the past five years, women and girls have been pushed out of education, work, public life, and decision-making. Afghan women, international legal experts, and human rights advocates have described this systematic and institutionalized discrimination as gender apartheid.

The international community must not normalize the Taliban. Nothing about Afghanistan without the women of Afghanistan.

Five years later, it is long past time to act.

Did you know that child marriage is legal in over half of all U.S. states?

Too Young To Wed is proud to join Tahirih and other endorsing organizations in supporting the reintroduction of the Child Marriage Prevention Act (CMPA) by Senator Durbin (IL), Senator Gillibrand (NY), Senator Schatz (HI), and Representative Gwen Moore (WI). The Child Marriage Prevention Act is the first federal legislation to tackle child marriage in the United States. The CMPA incentivizes states to and closes loopholes in our immigration laws that enable the exploitation of girls under the guise of marriage.

In the United States, child marriage brings devastating short- and long-term consequences, and girls are disproportionately harmed. Passing this legislation will send a strong message that the U.S. condemns child marriage, no matter where it occurs. Tell your members of Congress to support this bill and help make the U.S. a leader in the global movement to end child marriage and protect the futures of our children.

The world’s biggest barrier to girls’ education isn’t a lack of ambition, it’s the failure of the systems meant to protect them. We often describe girls as resilient. And they are. But resilience should never be a prerequisite for an education, for choosing their own future, or for simply being a child. Today, 119 million girls around the world are out of school. No child should have to overcome conflict, displacement, discrimination, or the threat of child marriage simply to sit in a classroom. Across countries, cultures, and circumstances, their stories point to the same hope: the freedom to learn, to choose, and to shape their own futures. At Too Young to Wed, we work alongside communities to strengthen the conditions that keep girls safe, in school, and free to shape what comes next. What if the climate crisis is also a child marriage crisis?
For millions of girls around the world, it already is.

When droughts, floods, and other climate disasters destroy crops, livelihoods, and family incomes, impossible choices often follow. In communities already experiencing poverty and instability, climate disasters can push families into impossible circumstances, increasing the risk of child marriage. Climate change doesn’t cause child marriage, but it can make the conditions that drive it even worse.

That’s why climate action must also be about protecting girls’ rights. When girls can stay in school, when families have the support they need, and when women are included in climate decision-making, communities are better prepared to face a changing world. Their leadership and knowledge are essential to building solutions that leave no one behind.

Girls married as children in the United States are 31 percent more likely to live in poverty. 50 percent more likely to drop out of high school. Four times less likely to finish college. And as a new report by Columbia University’s Institute of Global Politics reveals: “More than 66,000 of child brides in the United States were not legally old enough to provide consent to s*xual relations with their spouses. Outside marriage, this would be considered a s*x crime.”

Child marriage is not a distant problem. It is happening in Alabama, Kentucky, Texas, West Virginia. It is happening now, legally, to children.

We are working to end it around the world, including here at home. Because no girl should have her future decided before she has had a chance to choose it.

Our Butterfly Program launches in Appalachia this summer, trusted adults, real skills, and community for girls who need it most.
