Official Statement from the Office of Chief Eade:

STATEMENT REGARDING FATAL RESIDENTIAL FIRE

On behalf of the Lake Mohegan Fire District, I want to express our deepest condolences to the Toone family, their friends, classmates, and all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. The loss of two young lives is devastating and has deeply impacted our entire community. Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone grieving during this difficult time.

I also want to recognize the extraordinary efforts of the members of our fire department, EMS personnel, and the mutual aid agencies that responded to this incident. Arriving crews were confronted with extremely dangerous conditions and immediately entered the residence in an aggressive effort to locate and rescue the victims. Their actions reflected tremendous courage, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to protecting life.

Our firefighters and EMS personnel did everything within their power in their attempt to save those children. Their efforts represent the very highest standards of the fire service and emergency medical response.

Incidents such as this weigh heavily not only on the family and the community, but also on the first responders who worked tirelessly under extraordinarily difficult conditions.

At this time, and out of respect for the family, there are limited additional details available for release. The investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted by the Westchester County Cause and Origin Team in conjunction with the New York State Police - Cortlandt Barracks. Investigators continue to focus on the rear dining room area of the residence, specifically examining a melted extension cord and melted power strip as part of the investigation.

Right now, our focus remains on supporting the Toone family, supporting our firefighters and EMS personnel, and standing together as a community during this incredibly difficult time.

Happy EMS Week 2026 from Local 2956!

This week, we honor the incredible EMTs and Paramedics who provide life-saving care to those in need. Your dedication, professionalism, and compassion are the heart of emergency response, and our community is stronger because of you.

A special thank you to our partners at Mohegan EMS, Cortlandt Regional Paramedics, and the Yorktown Paramedics. Your teamwork, professionalism, and commitment make a real difference in the lives of so many.

Recently, members of Local 2956 took part in an in-house offering of the new “Pinned & Burning” training hosted by the Westchester County Fire Instructors.

This hands-on class focused on complex vehicle extrications and the real-world challenges that come with them. From evolving vehicle construction to high-stress rescue scenarios, the training emphasized techniques and problem-solving strategies aimed at improving efficiency on scene and, most importantly, patient outcomes.

Our members walked away with valuable knowledge, practical skills, and new approaches that will directly enhance how we respond and serve our community.

A special thank you to the Westchester County Fire Instructors for delivering an outstanding program, and to the Yorktown Highway Department for setting up the vehicles that made this training possible.

If you or your department are interested in taking this class, we highly encourage you to reach out to the Westchester County Fire Instructors. You can also find them at FDIC this year, where they’ll be offering the class, with limited openings still available!

You may have noticed our new profile picture!

Today, April 2nd, Local 2956 recognizes World Autism Awareness Day and the beginning of Autism Awareness Month. Throughout April, we stand alongside the autism community in raising awareness, promoting acceptance, and encouraging a deeper understanding of individuals with autism.

Autism affects individuals and families in many different ways, and this month serves as a reminder to continue learning, listening, and supporting one another. It’s about more than awareness, it’s about building a community where everyone feels valued, included, and respected.

As firefighters, we are committed to serving every member of our community with compassion, patience, and professionalism. We take pride in being there for our residents in every moment, and that includes supporting and advocating for those with autism and their families.

Local 2956 stands with you, today and every day!

The members of Local 2956 stand together in remembrance of Yorktown native Sheridan Gorman.

Tonight, we join our community in lighting our stations green as a symbol of remembrance, support, and unity for the Gorman family during this difficult time.

Yorktown is more than just where we serve, it’s our home. In moments like these, we stand shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors.

Sheridan will never be forgotten. 💚

Members of Local 2956 were honored to be invited back to George Washington Elementary School to participate in Read Across America Day! Our members love visiting the school each year, and this time we had the opportunity to read to multiple classes across several grades.

The students are always excited when we come by, especially when the conversation turns to the upcoming Field Day! Seeing their enthusiasm for reading and learning makes this event something we look forward to every year.

Thank you to the staff and students at George Washington Elementary for welcoming us once again. We can’t wait to come back next year!
