SLOCCA Members,
The association wanted to send an update out on the New World Screwworm (NWS) and let everyone know that we are actively communicating with CCA in regards to the single case of NWS identified yesterday in Zavala County, Texas.

CCA has also been communicating with the State Veterinarian and they’re together following the National playbook that was setup some time ago that CCA was a part of developing.

In addition to other containment measures, a 20km restriction zone (~12.4 miles) has been imposed around the site, with a 72 hour hold within that zone. Surveillance will occur an additional 20km from that zone. CCA and NCBA have been taking a proactive approach on this and are prepared for additional cases, should they be identified. AT THIS TIME, THERE ARE NO CONFIRMED DETECTIONS OF NWS IN CALIFORNIA. There are tools for treatment and a plan in place to minimize spread while maintaining movement of cattle.

FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC, PLEASE REASSURE CONSUMERS THAT THIS IS NOT A FOOD SAFETY ISSUE. Animals go through a thorough inspection process and protecting the health and general welfare of our livestock is always a priority of all producers. We will try to keep you informed on any changes; and will share emails to the membership with updates from the California Dept. of Food and Ag. In the meantime, please continue to be proactive and check your cattle to ensure that they are healthy and consider strategies to minimize wound risk and continue with your pre-identified programs for effective animal husbandry.
