Alyssa is 27. In the span of a few months, her life was turned upside down. As she puts it, “Things add up, especially with surgery.”

This is crazy to me. I often wonder what legacy really looks like and how you carry it forward when the world keeps moving so quickly.

I currently work for a nonprofit called SabesWings, founded by Bret Saberhagen and his wife, Kandace. For those who may not know the name, Bret was one of the best pitchers of his generation. He is a two-time winner, three-time All-Star, , and the 1985 MVP for the Kansas City Royals.

But time does what time does. Names fade. Generations change. Today, kids get their highlights through Reels, TikTok, and YouTube. So I find myself wondering: who will Bret Saberhagen be to the next generation? And how does his influence continue to matter long after the baseball stats are forgotten?

Maybe this is how.

This past weekend, Bret and Kandace showed up.

They showed up for our donors. They hugged people. They sat at baseball games. They looked our supporters and the families connected to our mission in the eyes. Because even in a world driven by followers, views and algorithms, real life relationships still matter.

And sometimes showing up for one person can become part of the legacy.
A year ago, 12-year-old Joe Spear wrote Bret a letter. Bret promised that if he ever made it to McKinney, Texas, he would come watch Joe play. This weekend, he kept that promise, sitting through two games in the Texas heat and cheering for Joe like he was one of his own. Joe, in turn, has been setting aside part of the money he earns selling golf balls to support .

That is legacy.

It is bigger than baseball. Bigger than awards. Bigger than a name.

It is using the influence you were given to make someone feel seen, and then watching that kindness inspire the next generation to do the same.

At SabesWings, we help families facing the very real financial toxicity that can come with a cancer diagnosis. But moments like this remind me that our work is also about building something that lasts.
