🦈 HOW DO WE TRACK A SHARK WHEN THE PINGS GO QUIET?

“By combining satellite tracking with acoustic detections, we can piece together a much more complete picture of Ormond’s movements,” says OCEARCH Senior Data Analyst John Tyminski.

Since being tagged in 2022, Ormond’s acoustic tag has been detected more than 1,700 times, revealing movements that satellite tracking alone might miss.

🦈 WHITE SHARK ORMOND RESURFACES 9 MONTHS LATER!

After months without a location, Ormond is back on the map! Between October 9th and 10th, we received 11 pings showing his northeasterly movement off Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. His latest ping places him ~28 miles southeast of Scatarie Island.

At the time of tagging on November 29, 2022, Ormond measured 9 feet, 11 inches and weighed an estimated 637 pounds.

Ormond was named in honor of our longtime partner Costa Sunglasses and its 40th anniversary. Founded in Ormond Beach, Florida, by a group of anglers committed to protecting our watery world, Costa continues to champion ocean conservation.

🦈 MEET THERESA, OUR NEWEST WHALE SHARK!

Theresa is now featured on the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker, giving us another opportunity to learn more about the world’s largest fish and the incredible journeys whale sharks make across our oceans.

🔧 THE OCEARCH IS GETTING READY FOR WHAT’S NEXT

Our research vessel is heading to Jacksonville Machine & Repair, LLC to begin its 10-year refit, helping ensure the ship is ready to support OCEARCH’s research and expeditions for years to come.

As Captain John Van Dellen shared:

“I’m confident that the work being done here by the JMR team will help ensure the safety, reliability, and productivity of our crew and research teams on the water for many years to come.”

🦈 SHARK SKIN HAS A SECRET

A shark’s skin does more than help it glide through the water. It may also help keep harmful bacteria from taking hold, giving these animals an added layer of protection when they’re injured.

It’s another example of how shark biology is full of adaptations that scientists are still working to understand.

🦈 WHAT’S DRAWING WHITE SHARK CONTENDER NORTH?

Contender’s latest movements into the Northumberland Strait have researchers asking new questions about what brings white sharks into these northern waters.

“Predictable seasonal concentrations of prey may be one factor influencing their movements,” says OCEARCH Senior Data Scientist John Tyminski.

We’re continuing to follow Contender’s journey and look for patterns that can help us better understand what shapes white shark movements across the western North Atlantic.
