At the August 24 club meeting, Irvin E. Smith, MD, of Healthworks Medical, LLC, gave a talk on “Time-Sensitive Medical Emergencies: What to Do Until EMS Arrives.” He stressed the importance of taking action during emergencies, especially in cases of cardiac arrest, noting that knowing CPR and how to use an external defibrillator can save lives and help prevent brain damage. The club expressed gratitude for Dr. Smith’s many years of service to the Lone Oak Volunteer Fire Department by making a donation to the department in his honor.

Lone Oak Lions welcomed back Erin Goodman, Executive Director, Papillion Center to speak to us at our August 10 meeting. Erin reminded us that the Papillion Center is a faith-based 501(c)(3) therapeutic and counseling center dedicated to providing services for children, adolescents, and families.
The non-profit specializes in helping clients impacted by developmental trauma, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), and attachment issues through individual, group, and family therapies. To make mental health care accessible to all families in need, the center operates on a community-funded sliding fee scale, offering targeted interventions in emotional support, social skills, and therapeutic parenting techniques.
She invited us to attend their benefit dinner again this year. This year it is being held on September 3 at First Baptist Church in Paducah. We will be there!

Our July 13 club program featured Heather Anderson, the Homeless Liaison for Paducah Public Schools. Heather shared the inspiring work of The STAY Program, which supports students in the City of Paducah School System who are experiencing homelessness.

The program helps these young people stay in school, access essential resources, and navigate the challenges that come with unstable housing. Today, more than 300 students rely on STAY for support.

In gratitude for Heather’s heartfelt presentation, the club made a donation to the program in her honor.

During our July 13 club meeting, Harper Schuman, granddaughter of Lions David and Sally Roof, spoke about her eye condition, the two eye surgeries she underwent, and another surgery that is anticipated later in childhood. She also shared a slide presentation showing how the surgeries have helped her. Harper is entering third grade.
In appreciation for her presentation, club members donated to the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation (KLEF) in her honor.

On June 22, the Lone Oak Lions Club gathered at the Lone Oak Community Center for our annual awards ceremony and officer installation. It was a great night of looking back at what we’ve achieved together and looking forward to another great year of service!
Thanks to your support, our 2025-2026 year was another great year of service. Here is a look at the impact we made together:

Congratulations to Lion Buddy Rushing (the unofficial mayor of Lone Oak! 😊)! Outgoing President AJ Collins presented Lion Buddy with this honor. He has been a dedicated member since 1971 and was instrumental in the success of our 2026 Charity Golf event, as well as securing fantastic speakers for our meetings during the year.

Lone Oak Lions are proud to share with you our refurbished eyeglass collection box, located near the right-side entrance of Banks Market in Lone Oak.
After years of collecting thousands of used eyeglasses, it was time to give the box a fresh new look.
A special thank-you goes to Lion John Deming for transporting the box for its makeover and bringing it back to its home. We also appreciate the Lone Oak Church of Christ for providing the lift truck that made the job possible.
We are deeply grateful to James Banks and Banks Market for supporting Lone Oak Lions and our service projects by giving us space for the collection box for so many years. They are truly a community oriented business.
Lions around the world have supported sight programs since Helen Keller spoke to the Lions convention in 1925 and asked, “Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?”. Since then, Lions have grown their service in many ways, but helping with vision remains one of our most important missions.
So, what happens when you drop your old glasses in our collection box? Lone Oak Lions Club volunteers clean and disinfect them, then pack them in suitcases. From there, they travel with mission groups and other organizations to people in need—people far away and people we will never meet, but whose lives we are helping to improve.
Next time you’re at Banks Market, feel free to drop off any unused glasses. We serve!
