This morning while handing out snack bags, I met a gentleman who goes by “Guns.” He was new to me and sitting in the shopping center waiting for the thrift store to open, unaware they were closed today.

As we talked, it was obvious life had not been kind to him lately. Sunburned skin peeling, worn down by the elements, and carrying more than most of us could imagine. Despite everything, he was humble and grateful.

One thing he desperately needed was a pair of shoes.

Because of this community, I was able to run to our storage unit and come back with shoes in his size, fresh socks, a few clothing items, and something to eat. I even talked him into taking a tent. He wasn’t sure he wanted it, but I told him that if nothing else, it would at least give him some shade from this relentless sun.

Today, he has shoes on his feet, clean socks, clothes if he chooses to change, food in his stomach, and information about our nightly meals.
Every donation, every pair of socks, every shirt, every dollar given matters. Because when we encounter someone in need, we’re able to say “yes” instead of “I’m sorry, we don’t have it.”

I’m so thankful for a community that continues to give, support, and love our neighbors.

It breaks my heart every time I find a new one out there, but it gives me hope knowing we don’t have to face this crisis alone.

Many people are surprised to learn that there are more than 100 identified homeless children in Granville County alone. These children will be heading back to school soon, and together we can help ensure they have the supplies they need to start the year with confidence.

For many of us, a vehicle isn’t a luxury—it’s how we get to work, medical appointments, the grocery store, and care for our families. Without insurance, they are unable to drive legally and risk even greater hardship.
