The Olathe Noon Optimist Club is 80 years old this June and continues to serve the needs of Olathe youth. At yesterday’s meeting members celebrated the club’s milestone with cake, games, and special gifts. Everyone also shared memories of club activities, events, and members through the years. Our guests were Rod and Suzi Obermeier from the Topeka Optimist Club.

The Olathe Noon Optimist Club sponsored a team in the Sunflower Wickets Croquet Tournament on June 5. Tom and Melinda Kearney represented Olathe Noon as our team in the event. The tournament raises money for the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Foundation. The historic site hosts many events for the young people in Olathe.

This year the Olathe Noon Optimist Club is celebrating its 80th birthday! In June 1946 the club was formed to serve the young people in Olathe. A lot has changed since 1946, but our purpose remains the same—“To bring out the best in youth, our communities, and ourselves”. Join us on Thursday, June 11 at Blue Moose Restaurant at 11:00 a.m. to learn more about Optimists and to help us celebrate 80 years of service to Olathe.

Our guest at this week’s meeting was Claire Barnhart with the Kansas State Olathe Horticultural Research Extension Center. The center is located on 352 acres west of Olathe and does agricultural research on vegetables, fruit, turf, and landscaping. Claire manages projects dealing with grafting tomato plants. Area growers then purchase the plants from
the farm for their seasonal tomato crops.
