BREAKING BARRIERS SCHOLARSHIP

Ten students will receive $1,000 scholarships to support their educational journey in advertising, marketing, public relations, or a related field.

This opportunity is open to individuals who were formerly incarcerated or who have one or more currently incarcerated parents.

Eligibility:
• Current undergraduate or graduate student, or graduated within the past yeara
• Attending or recently graduated from a college/university in California, Florida, North Carolina, New York, or Texas
• Pursuing or holding a degree in advertising, marketing, public relations, or a related field

Meet Elio Alfonso, Associate Professor of Accounting at the University of Tampa and one of FPEP's dedicated faculty partners.

Through the Florida Prison Education Project, Professor Alfonso has taught a wide range of accounting courses, including Financial Accounting I & II, Managerial Accounting I & II, and Individual Income Taxes I, II, and III, helping incarcerated students build practical financial knowledge and career-ready skills.

"Accounting is the language of business," Professor Alfonso says, as seen in FPEP Post 1.1. Whether students pursue entrepreneurship, continue their education, or enter the workforce, financial literacy provides tools that extend far beyond the classroom.

We're grateful for educators like Professor Alfonso who make higher education more accessible and help create opportunities for students across Florida's correctional institutions.

Meet Carlos Valdez, a faculty member in UCF's College of Business and an FPEP instructor dedicated to expanding access to higher education through practical, career-focused learning.

Through FPEP, Professor Valdez teaches Integrated Professional Selling at Polk Correctional Institution, a course that equips students with the communication, relationship-building, and critical thinking skills essential for today's workforce. Students explore professional sales strategies, business-to-business communication, and real-world problem-solving that can be applied across a wide range of careers.

When research meets opportunity, it creates real impact.

During her recent sabbatical, educational psychology professor Michele Gill brought her research beyond the classroom and into the community by piloting an introductory psychology course with incarcerated students at the Central Florida Reception Center through the Florida Prison Education Project. Developed in collaboration with three of Gill's doctoral students, the course helped learners apply psychology concepts like emotional regulation and self-efficacy to everyday challenges. By the end of the spring semester, 16 students earned certificates of completion and gained new tools to help build resilience and shape their futures.

“I felt like if I could give them some tools, it might help make their experience less daunting. A lot of them said they want to come back and work on their degrees now — and they have the confidence to do it.” 💛🖤
