Float down the Mekong River by day and shop until you drop at the largest handicraft market in all of Laos by night in Luang Prabang!

Our ILP Thailand volunteers often get to visit Laos during their semester abroad, and we’ve collected our favorites from many of their travel itineraries on the ILP blog! Search up “Laos” on blog.ilp.org and take a look at some activities you could plan for your trip!

There’s so much to do in this little city, and even more culture to immerse yourself in. After a few days here, you are bound to fall in love with every nook and cranny.

Climb on top of the largest cathedral in Central America for the best views/sunset spot in the city... and maybe the country!

When volunteering or going on vacation in Nicaragua, the Leon Cathedral is a must see!

The Leon Cathedral houses a gorgeous and detailed interior, but you can pay a couple dollars to head to the rooftops and walk along the white-domed roof before finding the best spot to see the city. You can even watch the sun set into creamy pinks and oranges from here.

Pretty cool to watch the sunset on a 200+ year old cathedral, right?

Need some tips on how to keep collecting teaching supplies affordable? Keep reading!

Something many of our volunteers forget is that there are many different ways to save $$ on teaching supplies!

The supplies don’t need to be new. Most volunteers are able to get most or even all of their supplies donated by family and friends. We recommend sharing a detailed supply list on your social media, with co-workers, with church groups, sent in a group chat to family, your neighbors, and wherever else!

A lot of times people you know have items laying around their house that they want to get rid of. Plus, by donating, they can help support your experience.

Even something as simple as a half-used bag of popsicle sticks from their kids middle school science project would be an easy addition to your teaching supplies haul🤷‍♀️

We have more ideas on how to get supplies for free, here:

Sometimes we receive donated supplies at our office. If you’re in the Orem, Utah area and are having a hard time getting supplies (especially if you’re signing up really late and don’t have as much time), contact us. We can let you know if we have any supplies on hand that we can share with you to take.

“Words can never explain how grateful I am to have had this experience. The Dominican Republic will always feel like home because of the people who became family. I love these kids with everything in me, and I will forever cherish the memories we made together. “Teacha Broccoli” is my favorite name I’ve ever been called, and I miss hearing it every single day. Te amo, Dominican Republic. ❤️🇩🇴”

If you are in the mood for breathtaking landscapes and emerald green waters Khao Sok National Park in Thailand is the place for you!

On the mainland between Phuket and Krabi, Khao Sok is one of the oldest rainforests to date and makes for an unforgettable weekend trip for our volunteers! The park offers limestone mountains, lakes, caves, and floating bungalows overlooking Cheow Larn Lake! This national park is a perfect opportunity to disconnect and experience the wild side of Thailand! 🏞️🌿🥭

What are Local Coordinators?

Something so special about ILP is our local coordinators! We employ local staff who are native to the area and act as our in-country team for managing the program (while also helping the volunteers adjust to their new home!). They act as a liaison from the head teacher/ILP group to the school. They are there for any general needs of the volunteers and are great at helping the volunteers adjust to the country, they speak the local language which can be very useful for any language barriers! Local coordinators keep an eye out for the ILP volunteers and are there to help out when needed. They are an amazing resource while in country and a beloved part of the ILP family!

Hidden within the deserts of Peru are the mysterious Nasca Lines! 🔆✈️🏝️

These are giant drawings etched into the earth with some stretching 30 miles long. These drawings of hummingbirds and monkeys are best seen from above which makes the mystery even greater!

The ancient Nazca people created this wonder over 2,000 years ago by removing the top layer of rocks to reveal the lighter sand underneath, remaining perfectly preserved due to the area’s consistent dry climate. No one knows their purpose yet they remain to this day one of the world’s greatest archaeological mysteries! Some speculate they were connected to the stars, water sources, or used for religious ceremonies.

They are located not far from where our volunteers live so they have been loving seeing the Nasca lines and their mysterious history! Seeing this phenomenon makes for a great day trip during the weekend! Just another reason to add beautiful Peru to your bucket-list!

“Saying bye to these kids is so hard! I’m so lucky to have spent so many days with them being teacha iley. They are the sweetest souls with the cutest smiles and the most precious friendships. These 3 months have been full of so much love.
Tears in my eyes writing this! I will miss them forever and ever. I love Thailand and all the angels I have met here. I’m so lucky🫶🇹🇭”

“Should I wait to apply until I know which country I want to go to?”

The best advice we can give you is don’t wait to apply! Because we have a limited number of volunteer spots in each location, the earlier you apply, the more country options will be available to you:)

After you submit the first part of your application (the online form), you’ll be put in touch with an ILP representative who is there to answer your questions and give you more information about each country you have your eye on.

While ILP is the same no matter where you go, the experience varies a bit as each location and program is unique in various ways. We’ve actually found that many volunteers end up switching where they’d like to go anyway after talking to their rep and learning more about each program!

Comment down below which countries you’re interested in volunteering in!

Places we send volunteers include:
•Thailand 🇹🇭
•Dominican Republic 🇩🇴
•Uganda 🇺🇬
•Mexico 🇲🇽
•Peru 🇵🇪
•Costa Rica🇨🇷
•Poland 🇵🇱
•Romania 🇷🇴
• Bulgaria 🇧🇬
•India 🇮🇳
