“Should I wait to apply until I know which country I want to go to?”

The best advice we can give you is don’t wait to apply! Because we have a limited number of volunteer spots in each location, the earlier you apply, the more country options will be available to you:)

After you submit the first part of your application (the online form), you’ll be put in touch with an ILP representative who is there to answer your questions and give you more information about each country you have your eye on.

While ILP is the same no matter where you go, the experience varies a bit as each location and program is unique in various ways. We’ve actually found that many volunteers end up switching where they’d like to go anyway after talking to their rep and learning more about each program!

Comment down below which countries you’re interested in volunteering in!

Places we send volunteers include:
•Thailand 🇹🇭
•Dominican Republic 🇩🇴
•Uganda 🇺🇬
•Mexico 🇲🇽
•Peru 🇵🇪
•Costa Rica🇨🇷
•Poland 🇵🇱
•Romania 🇷🇴
• Bulgaria 🇧🇬
•India 🇮🇳
•Vanuatu 🇻🇺
•Nicaragua 🇳🇮

A weekend trip to Bucharest is a must when volunteering in Romania!🇷🇴

As Romania’s capital, it has a mesmerizing mix of many different cultures, architectural styles, and vibes🤩

Bucharest feels old and close to the city’s extensive history with its very Gothic and looming architecture, street art, and huge open parks rimmed with Transylvanian towers.

Speaking of Transylvania, make sure to take a day trip over from Bucharest to visit the famous Dracula’s castle!🏰

Here’s a couple of other things we recommend our volunteers check out while in Bucharest:
• Browse through the Carturesti Carusel bookshop
• Relax at Therme Bucharest
• Visit the Palace of Parliament
• Shop at the flea market

Did you know there’s an alternative hiking route to Machu Picchu than the Inca Trail?🥾

Many of our ILP volunteer groups opt for the Salkantay Trek! This GORGEOUS hike takes about 3-5 days and is surrounded by blue lagoons, picturesque glaciers, tropical jungles, and of course the famous Andes mountains!🏔️

The beauty and diversity of this hike make it the perfect adventure to add on to your exploration of one of our favorite world wonders🌎🗺️

Do I need to know a different language to go on ILP?

Nope! Most volunteers only speak English and get on just fine! You don’t need to know any language other than English to teach. Friendly locals and Google translate quickly become your best friends while abroad!

Although living in a different country does offer a unique opportunity to learn the local language. Most volunteers learn phrases that make communication easier with the locals and can be a great way to show respect to the culture! 🗣️🤍

Volunteering in Central America is such an incredible experience and offers lots of travel opportunities! Our volunteers in Costa Rica traded their teaching outfits for swimsuits and hopped on over to Panama for a few days to take in the coastal beaches and fresh fruit stands. Panama’s vibrant landscapes and rich culture offers the best vacation! ☀️🌴🌺

I could never get tired of seeing the friendships that come out of ILP! Volunteering abroad can be a fabulous way to meet people your age who also have a passion for travel and volunteering. I know, some of my best friends have come from my time spent with ILP! I love when we can get together outside of our time abroad to catch up and reminisce on all of those memories! 💌

This is your sign to go thrifting when looking for clothes to bring on your semester abroad!🛍️

We HIGHLY recommend that our volunteers don’t bring clothes that would make you sad if they got ruined. In most of our locations, your clothes will be washed in a washing machine that can be a bit rough... and you will be hanging your clothes to dry.

Because of the laundry situation, it is likely that your clothes will come back really worn and stretched out. You may not want to wear them after you come home. (You get kind of tired of them after 3-4 months anyways.)

Some past volunteers recommend not spending too much money on new clothes or bringing too many favorites ... but also packing a few outfits they feel good in (for vacations/special occasions).

Thrifting gives you the perfect mix of something new, but something you can be comfortable possibly getting rid of once your semester is complete:)

“Romania will hold a piece of my heart forever 🇷🇴
The kids never could say my name, but that’s ok because I loved walking into the homes and hearing them yell: Bricken, Brigette, Buini, or Broneeeeeeeeeeeeeey!!
The things we would do to make the kids laugh were ridiculous, but I would gladly do it every day if I could. They have the sweetest spirits and are so happy despite some of the challenges they face.
Thank you to sweet Mother Gabi who is an angel on earth. Thank you for sharing your love of the kids and love for Romania!
And thank you to my group!❤️
Pa Pa for now Romania!
(We weren’t allowed to take pictures of the kids but just know that they are the sweetest darlings❤️)”
