“What a summer…

I’m so grateful for the opportunity I had to teach English in the Dominican Republic these past three months. It truly was an experience I wouldn’t trade trade for the world!
Those who have been know that the people there are some of the most welcoming and loving people you could meet! They taught me so much about what it means to be apart of something bigger than yourself! Thank you also to my new friends! We survived teaching! Thanks for letting me have such a fun summer with you guys!

And to my kids,
Thank you for making this summer so special for me, I truly wouldn’t have had it any other way! I’m going to miss waking up each day knowing I get to hang out with yall! You guys are so smart and have such incredible character, I think you might have taught me more this summer than I taught you :). Being teacher Parker (or Peter Parker) has been one of the biggest privileges of my life, and I have yall to thank for that! Keep learning and keep being awesome!!

Here is a general guideline, but please be aware that certain locations have different regulations.

For female teachers, all dresses and skirts must reach your knee or be longer. No jeans, but girls can wear nicer pants. Think long linen pants or dress pants. All tops should have sleeves, not be too low-cut, and cover your stomach and shoulders. No shirts with logos or holes.

Male teachers can teach in shorts as long as they reach your knee. No jeans or t-shirts with holes or logos.
Even though you’re volunteering, locals see you as a teacher and someone to look up to. How you dress while teaching and while around your students is important!

Another tip is to make sure you feel comfortable moving around because kids move around! If you constantly need to pull your shirt up or down, or your jeans are too tight, trust me, that’s one extra thing you don’t want to worry about.

Certain schools have more specific guidelines. When assigned to a country, you will be told in more detail what the specific guidelines are. This is just a loose guideline of what is expected of most countries’ volunteers!

In the southern corner of Peru is the country’s second-largest city, Arequipa! This breathtaking city is surrounded by three volcanoes and is known for its volcanic white stone architecture. 🌋

At 13,000 feet deep, Colca Canyon is a must-see while in the city. It is one of the deepest canyons in the world and twice as deep as the Grand Canyon! While visiting, you might even spot an Andean Condor! ⛰️

The city itself has plenty to offer, from historical sites and museums to delicious cuisine. Visit ancient monasteries and feed llamas at the local historic center! Our volunteers in Peru love this magical city! 🦙

“I’ve had the chance to live in the Osa peninsula as teacher Tylar for the past 2.5 months. Teaching was so hard but so good all at the same time. I’ve learned to look for the small joys. They are all around us! A rainbow, a rainstorm, beautiful flowers, funny stories, kids laughing, connecting with the locals, people caring for each other. Goodness is everywhere all around the world.”

One of the most underrated parts of traveling abroad is getting to compare how different each country’s currency looks!🤩💶

When you’re in the US, you may mostly use your card, but that’s not always the case in other countries!
Your favorite little fruit stand in Asia or the souvenir shops in Africa are probably not going to have card readers. In many of our locations, the local places you stumble upon (drink shops, smoothie stands, fruit stands, snack stands, etc) prefer to be paid in cash!🍉🍇

Saving a few bills and coins is such an easy souvenir to collect when traveling to a lot of different places!

Did you know ILP Bulgaria volunteers are a quick 2 hour flight away from a destination that seems to be on everyone’s travel bucket list: Greece!🐠⛴️

Walking alongside the picturesque cliff sides, witnessing glittering ocean views, and of course seeing the famous white and blue buildings are just a couple of the highlights that a trip to Greece has to offer. It’s the perfect place to “decompress” after a long semester of teaching 🤩🐟

If you’re feeling homesick while volunteering abroad don’t worry, it’s totally normal!🏠💌

After 30+ years of experience sending volunteers abroad, here are some cures that have helped our volunteers learn to love their “homes away from home.”🫶

Wander around your new city! Learning the layout of your new home and how to navigate it will help it feel less daunting.

Get to know the locals! Connecting with your local support, the owner of your neighborhood fruit stand, or the parents of the kids you get to teach every day can help you feel like a part of the community. 🍉

Spend time with the other volunteers in your group! You all are experiencing the same highs and lows at the same time and nobody knows what you’re going through better than the new friends that surround you:)

Keep up with the routines you set at home! Working out in the gym, reading before bed, or watching the newest release of Dancing with the Stars every Tuesday:) can help your life feel more familiar. 🎬🏃‍♀️

Be patient with yourself:) Adjusting to a whole new lifestyle is hard! Just take it one day at a time and remind yourself the “why” behind your choice to volunteer:) 🫶🌎
