Genderbands

Genderbands Genderbands is a nonprofit helping transgender and non-binary people pay for transition-related costs We also have resources available on our website.

Genderbands was founded in March of 2015 as a way to fundraise for founding President Ian Giles' top surgery. In June of 2015, the organization broadened its efforts and restructured into its current state. Genderbands is an international nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that serves the transgender, gender non-conforming, and other gender-diverse communities. The organization is largely volunteer-

run and executes programming, services, and events on both a local and international scale. Genderbands operates primarily through support from partnerships, direct sales, and the solicitation of donations. Internationally, we offer Transition Grants for surgical, medical, and social transition to all on the trans and non-binary spectrum. Occasionally we host educational workshops, which are often available both in-person and virtually. Locally, we offer free chest binders as well as social and educational events. Genderbands puts on the Utah Trans Pride Festival in August every year. This festival celebrates, centers, and brings visibility to our amazingly diverse transgender community. Transition Grant applications are available on our website from October 1 to November 30. Grants are awarded early the following year (usually late February). Grants must be used within the calendar year they are awarded. Whether you want to transition surgically, medically, socially, or not transition at all, Genderbands is here to support you in any way we can. We support all kinds of trans/nonbinary folks! You don’t have to transition to be trans/nonbinary!

After deep reflection and careful planning, the Genderbands Board of Directors is sharing an important update about the future of our work.

Genderbands began as a deeply personal act of care. Founder Ian Giles originally created Genderbands as a way to fundraise for their own top surgery. When that goal was met, Ian made a deliberate choice: instead of closing that chapter, they wanted to offer the same sense of possibility and peace of mind to others. What began as individual fundraising grew into a community-supported grant program, sustained by donations from allies and community members who believed in mutual aid and access to gender-affirming care.

As we look ahead, the Board is working to transfer Genderbands’ programs, assets, and remaining finances to local organizations whose values, leadership, and community accountability closely align with our own. This decision was not made lightly and followed months of discussion focused on the long-term best interest of the trans community.

We know change can bring questions and uncertainty. Genderbands’ legacy does not end here. It continues through the values that shaped it and the trans-led work that will live on.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported Genderbands over the years: donors, volunteers, partners, artists, organizers, and community members. This transition is rooted in that collective effort and in our belief that our mission is bigger than any single organization.

With care and gratitude,

The Genderbands
