Our Mission

The Shepherd’s Center of Orange Park (SCOOP) has been serving our community for nearly two decades as a non-profit, interfaith organization that improves the quality of life of seniors intellectually, physically, socially and spiritually. Our Classes

SCOOP’s “Adventures In Learning” is a very successful educational program attended by hundreds of senior adults on Mondays, Tuesdays, W

ednesdays and Thursdays for eight-week sessions, four times a year. More than 50 class offerings are available year-round at two locations, Orange Park and Fleming Island. Classes include Current Events, Computers, Exercise, Tai Chi Gung, Yoga, Line Dancing, Art and Craft classes, Bible Study, Bridge, Memoirs, Health and Finance classes, Scrabble, Sign Language, and many more. Our Members

SCOOP is touching lives and making a very positive impact for senior adults. Attendees tell us they’ve physically benefited from our Tai Chi Gung, Exercise, Yoga, and Line Dancing classes. Others have said they’ve enjoyed the intellectual stimulation from learning new skills such as computers, or crafts like oil painting. But most of all, everyone has said they’ve truly enjoyed the friendships they’ve made through the program. We see it in the smile on their faces as they greet each other. Lives are being changed. “I have met so many people,” says SCOOP member Marcy Stachowiak. “No matter where I go, I always run into people I know. SCOOP has changed my life.”

Volunteer-Driven

People always make the difference, and our people are the best! Thanks to our member volunteers, our program continues to be available for seniors in the First Coast area. More than 50 senior adult SCOOP members volunteer as teachers, office staff, board members, and helping us set up each week. These individuals are a wonderful example for younger generations, giving their time and talents serving others. We’re privileged and inspired by our volunteers, a truly wonderful group of people, and thankful for their help.

Older is Bolder. My favorite age is NOW. Positive statements about aging that can help you live longer! People who have a positive attitude about having more birthdays live an average of 7.5 years longer. You heard that right!

A landmark Yale University study led by Professor Becca Levy found that individuals with positive self-perceptions of aging lived an average of 7.5 years longer than those with negative attitudes. Published in 2002, this research suggests that a positive mindset about growing older acts asa stronger predictor of longevity than low blood pressure, low cholesterol, or even regular exercise.
