SUMMER OUTREACH CAMPAIGN - FIRE AND BURN SAFETY - AUGUST 22, 2026

Herkimer-Oneida Organizations Active in Disaster (HOOAD) are proud to support the American Red Cross, Utica Fire Department, 50 Forward Mohawk Valley, The Center, and The Clark Burn Center at Upstate University Hospital.
Tips you can use at home:

Find 2 different exits out of your home from each room
If you have a fire in your home, plan to get out in less than 2 minutes
Test your smoke alarms once a month. Modern smoke detectors have 10-year batteries but they must be tested regularly.
Do not leave the kitchen if you have food cooking on the stove
Set water heaters no hotter than 120 degrees Farenheit (or just below “medium”)
Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from drapes, furniture, or clothes
If you smoke, smoke outdoors and do not smoke near medical oxygen devices
If someone experiences a burn, use cold running water to relieve pain and cover with gauze. If the burn is serious, call 911!

This community service event will focus on the Cornhill section of Utica where the incidence of single family home fires has increased in recent years (However, all information is helpful to all). The Clark Burn Center at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY has also seen a rising trend of burn injuries in Oneida County, from other heat sources such as cooking stoves and hot water heaters.

Volunteers from the Red Cross will visit homes and talk to homeowners about fire and burn safety. They will also offer assistance in having smoke alarms checked and installed, if necessary. The American Red Cross offers fire safety education and smoke alarm installations year-round. All residents can apply for a FREE home smoke alarm inspection and installation with the American Red Cross: https://www.redcross.org/local/new-york/eastern-new-york/about-us/our-work/home-fire-campaign/home-fire-safety-visit.html

There will be a booth hosted by Red Cross and 50 Forward at the Parkway Center offering fire and burn safety information on August 22 from 10am-2pm. Utica residents are encouraged to visit The Parkway Center and talk to trained firefighters and volunteers about fire and burn safety.

Residents can learn more about fire and burn safety at the Oneida County Emergency Services website. The information has been translated into many languages to increase outreach to immigrant and refugee communities in Utica. https://oneidacountyny.gov/departments/emergency-services/resources/

This week is National Farmers Market Week. This annual celebration highlights the vital role farmers markets play in our nation’s food system. We are grateful for MADISON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY ONEIDA, NEW YORK for their support and to Stone Brother's for their dedication to our local Oneida market (435 Main Street). We also want to give a shout out to St. Paul's UMC Oneida NY for the benefits of their community garden, whose produce makes it's appearance at our local food pantries. And on Friday, stop by Allen Park for Picnic in the Park, A celebration of World Breastfeeding Week. Just 2 more weeks for Summer Lunch. Don't forget to check out the other information.

Today is NATIONAL ALL OR NOTHING DAY. We all have at least one thing that WE would like to overcome, need to do or want to do but might be fearful or hesitant to do so. This is the day to go ahead and do it, take that first step and go for it. “Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.” ~Carol Burnett

We want to point out today in History, how some changed life for others by taking that FIRST Step and insuring some pivotal freedoms.

President George H.W. Bush signs the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the most sweeping affirmation of rights for the disabled in American history at the time, into law. We must give credit to the Capitol Crawl, (March 1990) in which disabled people pulled themselves up all 100 steps of the Capitol building in order to highlight the nation’s lack of accessibility. This visual put a face to the limitations and obstacles that so many of the disabled deal with on a daily basis that it was impossible to continue to turn a blind eye.

President Harry S. Truman signs Executive Order 9981, banning racial discrimination in the military.

The US Postal Service was established by Congress appointing Benjamin Franklin as the Postmaster General. This response came about because of the Revolutionary war effort, were reliable communication was vital. But under British rule, mail was not private and this was a challenge to our success. In 1774 William Goddard, Benjamin Franklin’s former publishing partner, came up with a solution: He created an independent mail system with trusted riders who transported mail under lock and key. This was the system that Congress adopted.

So take a moment GO FOR IT! Better yet, Send a letter or a card to someone in your life. Let them know how they have changed your life.

Please check out the upcoming activities that have made changes in others lives.
