Jesus prepares a place of inexpressible joy for us. Only good things await beyond the door we call deathW Abundant blessings are in store for those who once were poor in spirit, mourning, or meek; for those who longed for justice and righteousness; and the peace- makers and pure of heart. These saints are wrapped in the love of God for all eternity. They no longer experience hunger, thirst, tears, pain, suffering, or sorrow. The former things have passed away. All things have been made new!
May we rejoice in the blessing always given, never earned, never achieved by the wonderful grace of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

We have come to our last consideration in God’s Economy. Moses sees the Promised Land but does not enter it. His story ends not in completion, but in intimacy with God and the quiet passing of leadership to the next generation. This week reframes stewardship as legacy: investing in a future we may not see, trusting that God’s work continues beyond us. In God’s economy, faithfulness is not measured by outcomes, but by love, trust, and the courage to pass the work on.

In God’s Economy, limits are sacred, accountability is a gift, and no one is meant to carry the work alone. Even after liberation, Moses slips back into the economy of Egypt, carrying too much and burning out. Jethro’s loving confrontation reminds us that over functioning is not faithfulness.
God’s Economy seeks to uncover people’s gifts, sharing in leadership and care together, and trusting in the abundance of resources in the community. It requires that people trust in themselves and in each other.

In God’s Economy, freedom requires relearning how to live. In the wilderness, God provides manna as a daily, collective provision. This week invites us to unlearn the empire’s habits and practice a new way of trusting God together. Manna teaches us the promise of enough.
If you are interested in exploring ideas of trusting God, Elaine Heath has taught the practice of the Contemplative Stance through the Missional Wisdom Foundation. This practice has simple, though not easy, ways to engage in life: show up - pay attention - cooperate with God - release the outcome. We have seen the ways Moses continued to engage with God in these ways and the Israelites are asked to take this stance in the wilderness.

In God’s Economy, Before the burning bush, Moses is already conflicted: fleeing Egypt, unsure where he belongs, and rejected even when he tries to protect the vulnerable. When God calls him, Moses offers a thousand reasons why he is not enough. God reminds Moses, and us, that this work is not about individual capacity, but divine companionship. Calling in God’s economy is always communal, rooted in belonging, and sustained by the promise: “I will be with you.”
Each of us can respond to God’s Economy trusting God’s presence granting us the will to address scarcity with abundance, to address fear and isolation with connection and see what gifts can be uncovered with grace in love.

In God’s Economy, the kingdom functions by its own rules. It is a table where there is always room for more people, and an endless supply of bread and w**e. It is a font where all are welcome, where all are invited to splash in the waters of baptism and be named children of God. It is a realm where our rules of space and time no longer apply, as we enter into ancient story and liturgy alongside the saints who have come before us.
God’s Economy break in through the courage of women who refuse to cooperate with the old economy. The story of Shiphrah, Puah and Moses’ mother, Miriam create a chain of courage. Abundance is possible when people choose connection and responsibility for one another.

In God’s Economy, the kingdom functions by its own rules. It is a table where there is always room for more people, and an endless supply of bread and w**e. It is a font where all are welcome, where all are invited to splash in the waters of baptism and be named children of God. It is a realm where our rules of space and time no longer apply, as we enter into ancient story and liturgy alongside the saints who have come before us. It is a sanctuary where we find the courage to confess our sins and receive God’s extravagant, scandalous forgiveness. It is a community where love and justice supercede force and greed. It is a place where the most vulnerable are the most cared for, and generosity abounds so that all have enough. And it is a kingdom where all are invited to participate.

Genesis and Matthew’s readings are all about forgiveness. In the complex web of human relationships, forgiveness often feels messy. We may not understand it, and it may at times feel entirely out of reach. Yet, as followers of Jesus, we are called to wrestle with the promise that even when forgiveness feels impossible, there is room for us and for others in the wideness of God’s mercy.
Week after week, we hear God’s words of forgiveness for us and for our neighbors. We are reminded that there is always and forever enough of God’s grace and forgiveness to go around. God’s forgiveness sends us out in the world to practice the hard work of forgiving others and receiving their forgiveness in turn, knowing that God will meet us again and again with mercy and grace.

Navigating life with other humans is not always easy. We who call ourselves the church likely know this all too well. As the church, we are called to wrestle with difficult questions about faith and life, but at times, even with the best intentions, we leave one another feeling hurt, overlooked, or misunderstood.
Jesus knew a thing or two about life in community. He knew what it was like to be betrayed by the ones he loved. Yes, despite all of this, he knew that faith is best practiced in community.
His admonition was to practice truth telling, courage and accountability. This along with compassion and love for and with one another. By God’s grace, we are invited to build a community that more truly reflects God’s love poured out for the whole world.

Jesus issues a difficult invitation to his disciples: “Take up your cross and follow me.” While the disciples may have hoped for a Messiah who would set the world right through satisfying displays of force and strength, Jesus offers them a different vision. His new kingdom or reign will not be built on traditional concepts of power and glory. It is instead a kingdom centered on the cross.
The cross reminds us that following Jesus requires nothing less than our whole lives. To follow Jesus is to love our neighbors with a self-sacrificing love, to sit in the discomfort of another’s struggle, and to be willing to lay down our power and privilege to see the world from our neighbor’s point of view.
Putting love of God and neighbor above power, prestige, and comfort is countercultural. It might even get us into trouble. But God’s love always gets the last word.
