We create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

For more than 60 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As a donor and volunteer-supported organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 7 through 21, throughout the Omaha/Council Bluffs and Lincoln metro areas. We develop positive friendships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. By partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers, and others in the community, we are accountable for each child in our program achieving:
- Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships
- Avoidance of risky behaviors
- Educational success

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:
Become a mentor and spend time with a youth in your community doing activities you both enjoy through our Community-based program, or work with high school students in our MentorU program. 🌟 Every hero has a story, and we have one of our own to add to : Meet Alejandra!

When challenges within her family and the uncertainty of the pandemic changed Alejandra’s world, she found a caring mentor in Cassie. Through zoo visits, musicals, ice cream outings, and meaningful conversations, they built a connection that helped Alejandra feel less alone. As she navigated anxiety and depression during her teen years, Alejandra leaned on counseling, family, faith, and Cassie to develop healthy coping skills. “Cassie believed in me when I needed it most. Because of her support, I learned I wasn’t alone,” Alejandra says.

Alejandra turned her experiences into a way to encourage others through Hiya’s Beads of Courage, a bracelet brand that reminds teens they aren’t alone. Her compassion earned her MENTOR Nebraska’s Young Leader of the Year recognition in 2024. After graduating from high school this spring, Alejandra joined Big Futures while continuing her match with Cassie. She’s learning to advocate for herself, ask for help, and pursue her goals with confidence.

Just like the heroes of LAIKA Studios’ Wildwood, Alejandra’s story shows how having someone believe in you can help you find your own courage. We love seeing and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America come together to celebrate the power of courage, connection, and mentorship! ✨

🌟 MentorU Student Spotlight! 🌟

A BIG congratulations to Hillary on being crowned 2026 National American Miss Nebraska Teen! 👑

Hillary is a senior at Millard North and has been part of our MentorU program since last year. Hillary speaks both French and English and serves as a youth leader with African Immigrant Family Services, inspiring other young people to believe in themselves and chase their dreams.

✨ Fun fact: The boy escorting Hillary in one of the photos is her brother, Bill, who is also in MentorU! This November, she'll head to Orlando to compete at the National American Miss America pageant! 👏
