In cathodic protection, a connection isn’t “good” because it’s tight — it’s good because it has low contact resistance.

Key reminders from the field:
• Mechanical connections need clean, bright metal + solid contact pressure
• Dirt/oxide/loose hardware = resistance + heat
• Poor connections can lead to system failures and expensive troubleshooting

Corrosion doesn’t take the winter off, so your protection plan shouldn’t either.

In cold environments, materials face unique challenges that can accelerate degradation if they’re not properly addressed in design, coating selection, and maintenance planning.

Key factors influencing corrosion in cold climates include:

💧 Moisture retention from snow, ice, and repeated freeze–thaw cycles.
🧊 Reduced coating flexibility and increased brittleness at low temperatures.
❄️ Delayed curing or improper film formation when coatings are applied in cold conditions.
🌡️ Thermal contraction stresses that can cause cracking at joints or in coated surfaces.
🔎 Hidden corrosion beneath insulation, ice, or protective coverings.

Cold-weather corrosion damage often develops quietly, appearing later as cracking, delamination, or premature coating failure.

That’s why corrosion protection in cold climates demands cold-weather-compatible materials, rigorous surface preparation, and application methods tailored for low temperatures.
