Electrical isolation is essential for controlling CP current—but when applied without full evaluation, it can introduce serious safety and corrosion risks.

In the February 2026 issue of Materials Performance, Ahmed E. Abdelbagi and Usman Shahzad of Saudi Aramco examine the real-world challenges associated with isolation flanges and joints, including:

⚡ Induced AC voltage and touch potential hazards
🔌 Stray current interference near high-voltage lines
🛢️ Internal corrosion in pipelines carrying conductive fluids
🛠️ Premature failures from improper device selection or installation

The article provides practical mitigation strategies to help engineers design safer, more reliable systems.

In cathodic protection, a connection isn’t “good” because it’s tight — it’s good because it has low contact resistance.

Key reminders from the field:
• Mechanical connections need clean, bright metal + solid contact pressure
• Dirt/oxide/loose hardware = resistance + heat
• Poor connections can lead to system failures and expensive troubleshooting

Corrosion doesn’t take the winter off, so your protection plan shouldn’t either.

In cold environments, materials face unique challenges that can accelerate degradation if they’re not properly addressed in design, coating selection, and maintenance planning.

Key factors influencing corrosion in cold climates include:

💧 Moisture retention from snow, ice, and repeated freeze–thaw cycles.
🧊 Reduced coating flexibility and increased brittleness at low temperatures.
❄️ Delayed curing or improper film formation when coatings are applied in cold conditions.
🌡️ Thermal contraction stresses that can cause cracking at joints or in coated surfaces.
🔎 Hidden corrosion beneath insulation, ice, or protective coverings.

Cold-weather corrosion damage often develops quietly, appearing later as cracking, delamination, or premature coating failure.

That’s why corrosion protection in cold climates demands cold-weather-compatible materials, rigorous surface preparation, and application methods tailored for low temperatures.

In 2024, during a site visit at the City of Omaha's Papillion Creek Interceptor, the team discovered something shocking: an entire manhole structure was missing.

What followed was an extraordinary effort from field-design repairs to coordinating with multiple agencies to keep the community safe while being cognizant of the cost of repairs.

This emergency repair project is a true testament to collaboration and commitment to protecting essential services for the local communities. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4qkRBqS
