BuildUp Apprentices is proud to stand alongside our sisters, allies, and advocates at this year's Tradeswomen Build Nations Conference in Houston, Texas! 💪🏽👷‍♀️

With so many of our board members in attendance, we're coming home fired up, inspired, and more committed than ever to the work ahead!

The energy, solidarity, and collective strength of thousands of tradeswomen coming together reminds us exactly why we do what we do.

At BuildUp Apprentices, we believe getting into the trades is just the beginning. Staying in, overcoming barriers, and building a successful, sustainable career is where support matters most.

We're bringing this energy back to our communities, our apprentices, and our mission. The work continues, and we're just getting started!

On behalf of the Washington State Building & Construction Trades Council, you’re invited to the Construct A Career Convening and Celebration event later this month in Tukwila.

They are bringing everyone together on Thursday, September 24 at the Teamsters Union Hall to share their pilot-program outcomes from the concept to our final deliverables under the Washington Jobs Initiative and Good Jobs Challenge.

They are pleased to share that the concept of Apprenticeship Navigators, who provide individual case management to apprentice seekers and early apprentices, has far exceeded every goal and outcome we hoped to achieve, including retention of apprentices, amount of participants served, and increased expansion to underserved and underrepresented populations.

During the event, they will also ask for your voice and input! They briefly break into tables to work through which parts of the model should continue and what it would take to make Construct a Career permanent.

This is the critical next step for Construct a Career as we phase out of the Washington Jobs Initiative grant, and we want to hear from you.

For those who can stay longer, we're celebrating afterwards! Hear impact stories, enjoy food and refreshments, and a social hour to thank the team and the partners who carried this.

Since 1984, Washington Women in Trades has honored women who make a difference in their workplaces. They are crew chiefs and apprentices; instructors and union organizers. They are leaders, mentors and business owners. Each of them brings power, creativity and kindness to the perpetual challenge: Encourage more women to consider and join the trades then make sure they STAY!
We don’t do it alone. We encourage coworkers, friends and family to share the stories of these people. That’s where you come in. We’re pretty sure you know someone who deserves some recognition. TELL US!

Our thoughts are with apprenticeship programs, apprentices, families, Tribes, and communities affected by the ongoing wildfires in eastern Washington.

We recognize the challenges these events can bring, and we want you to know that you are not alone.

Wildfire Resources

During this challenging time, we want to remind you of the flexibility available to support apprentices in state declared disaster areas:

Housing and Immediate Support
a. American Red Cross: For emergency shelter, meals, and supplies.

b. Local 211or wa211.org: Find local food, housing, and other community resources.

c. Your county’s website: For forms and to find aid if you are displaced due to wildfire damage.

For WA Grant for Apprenticeship (WG-A) recipients, under WAC 250-21-100, Satisfactory Program Progress (SPP) flexibility exists for apprentices whose program progress is affected by the disaster. Contact [email protected] with any specific questions.

Emergency aid provided for unexpected expenses related to an apprentice’s Cost of Attendance components can be removed if it impacts calculations to determine need for WG-A and the Native American Apprentice Assistance Program (NAAAP).

BuildUp is hiring an Executive Director! We’re looking for a mission driven leader ready to grow a statewide nonprofit supporting construction apprentices and expanding awareness of union apprenticeship pathways.

This role blends nonprofit leadership with hands on direct service. You’ll oversee statewide Construct a Career programming, supervise Apprenticeship Navigators, support apprentices facing barriers, and lead fundraising to sustain and expand our work.

If you’re passionate about workforce equity, labor partnerships, and helping apprentices succeed, we want to hear from you.
