This , we mark 161 years since the emancipation of the remaining slaves in Texas. And we do so with clear eyes: the work of liberation is not finished.

It was not finished in 1865. It was not finished when the Voting Rights Act was signed in 1965. And it is far from finished today — in 2026 — as we watch the very tools of Black political power being dismantled, state by state, map by map, in real time.

BWOPA was founded on the conviction that Black women's liberation requires Black women's political power.

So this Juneteenth, we celebrate. We grieve. And we organize.

🚨DID YOU KNOW: 65%. That's the share of Black women and Latinas who say their training programs are doing only a fair or poor job preparing them for future opportunities.

That number should alarm every educator, policymaker, and healthcare leader in California. Mentorship and clear career pathways can change this — and our research shows exactly how.

: Our new report reveals over half of Black women and Latinas surveyed have been discouraged from pursuing certain healthcare careers.

That's not a pipeline problem — that's a systems problem.

In partnership with Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE), Evitarus and Cents Health Equity Navigator, our research finds a deep misalignment between education programs and what the workforce actually needs.

Mentorship, academic counseling, and flexible training pathways aren't extras. They're essential.

The dream is there. So are the obstacles. Many Black women and Latinas want healthcare careers — but financial pressure, rising housing costs, and too few advancement opportunities are standing in the way. Meanwhile, workforce shortages grow and representation gaps remain.

Join the BWOPA ONE's Election Protection Team as we continue our voter outreach efforts leading up to the June 2nd Election! Together, we have already made an incredible 10,721 voter calls to help turn out the vote — and we’re just getting started.

We are currently seeking a few additional volunteers for the next two Saturdays - May 23rd and May 30th - 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM at our Downtown Oakland BWOPA office!

Volunteers will assist with phone banking voters while enjoying snacks, beverages, and a volunteer stipend as a thank-you for your time and commitment.

Families are welcome! If you have children, feel free to bring them along so they can participate in age-appropriate calls and learn firsthand about civic engagement and the voting process.

Thank you to California Secretary of State Dr. Weber for joining in conversation with our very own BWOPA State President Emeritus Dezie Woods-Jones for a special edition of our "Meet the Candidate: Up Close & Personal" virtual series. It was indeed a powerful and insightful conversation centered on the power of our vote, leadership, civic engagement and the future of California.
