Tony Krajewski Thurmond is an American politician, educator, social worker, and California’s 28th State Superintendent of Public Instruction since 2019, as well as Beyond Emancipation's former Executive Director!

What is California’s AB 2765? 🤔

New federal SNAP (CalFresh) rules are putting some foster youth and former foster youth at risk of losing food assistance because of new work requirements and time limits.

AB 2765 directs California to seek a federal waiver to protect current and former foster youth ages 24 and under who were in foster care at age 18 or older from these changes. The goal is to help make sure young people who have experienced the foster care system don’t lose access to food assistance while they’re transitioning into adulthood. 💙

Family can look different for every young person.

For youth in foster care, family might mean a biological parent, sibling, relative, foster parent, mentor, social worker, or another trusted adult who continues to show up.

This National Family Day, we’re celebrating the people who create connection, belonging, and stability for young people in all the many forms family can take. 💙

The area now known as Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, and surrounding East Bay cities is the traditional territory of the Lisjan people, a Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone group.

At Beyond Emancipation, we believe meaningful community work includes learning about the histories of the land and the people who have cared for it across generations.

Today and every day, we honor Indigenous resilience, culture, sovereignty, and continued presence. We invite our community to learn, listen, and recognize the Indigenous histories of the places we live and work.

Our office is closed today to honor Native Americans and we will return to our usual hours on Monday. Have a great weekend
