Leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our community.

Since 1981, the Foodbank, a member of Feeding America™ and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, has been providing food for hungry people throughout Southeastern Virginia and on the Eastern Shore. In our mission to lead the effort to eliminate hunger in our community, the Foodbank has distributed over 272 million pounds of food equating to over 226.8 million meals throughout our 4,745 square mile service area, which includes the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Franklin and Virginia Beach as well as the counties of Southampton, Northampton, Sussex, Isle of Wight and Accomack. During the 2013-2014 fiscal year, the Foodbank distributed over 18.6 million pounds of food equating to over 15.5 million meals to the community.

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore is the proud recipient of a $75,000 Summers Without Hunger grant from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation. This grant will help us address childhood food insecurity in our community. Each summer, when school is out, many children and families face greater challenges accessing food. The Summers Without Hunger grants help put food on the table.

Supporting your neighbors can be as simple as running your everyday errands. Through these retail campaigns, your spare change and small donations help put food on the tables of our neighbors:

🛒 Harris Teeter Harvest Feast Round Up (Sept 30 – Dec 29): Round up your purchase at checkout to benefit local food banks through Feeding America.
⛽ The Wawa Foundation Register Campaign (Oct 12 – Jan 4): Make a donation at the register to support hunger relief in your community.
🍎 Wegmans Check Out Hunger (Oct 21 – Nov 28): Give at the register to support your local food bank.
🛍️ TJX Help Stop Hunger Holiday Campaign (Oct 30 – Nov 1): Donate at participating stores to help neighbors facing hunger.

The inaugural Regional PB&J Challenge collected 21,274 jars of peanut butter and jelly for the Foodbank and Virginia Peninsula Foodbank

From September 1-30, 12 local governments across Hampton Roads went head to head to see who could collect the most. Congratulations to our winners:

🏆 Town of Windsor, Virginia won the per capita trophy! With only 14 employees, they brought in just under 1,000 jars.
🏆 City of Norfolk Government won the overall points award!

Thank you to Isle of Wight County Virginia, Hampton, VA - Gov, City of Williamsburg, Virginia - Municipal Government, City of Newport News, VA - Government, City of Portsmouth, VA Government, City of Chesapeake Government, City of Suffolk, VA - Municipal Government, Town of Smithfield, City Of Franklin, and James City County for taking part. PB&J is one of the most requested shelf-stable items a food bank can offer, and these donations will help neighbors experiencing food insecurity all across our region.

She's usually the one behind our social media posts, but today, we're turning the spotlight on her! 🎉

Please join us in congratulating our Communications and Content Coordinator, Kinaya Gibson, on being named a 2026 Z Creativity Honors recipient in the Workplace category by The Zeiders American Dream Theater!

Kinaya is the creative mind behind much of the content we share, from social media posts to the stories that help connect our community to our mission. Her creativity and dedication help bring the Foodbank's work to life every day.

This weekend, she was recognized alongside other creative professionals throughout Hampton Roads who are using their talents to make a positive difference in our community.

Making the evening even more special, Kinaya was joined by her parents and cousin, along with Foodbank President & CEO Chris Tan, Chief Development Officer Melissa Smith, and Director of Community Engagement Jeremy Rodden, who were there to celebrate her.

We're so proud of Kinaya and thrilled to see her creativity recognized beyond the Foodbank! 🧡

Hunger Action News: Forklift Rodeo Recap!

Special guests Salty from the Norfolk Admirals and Triton from the Norfolk Tides joined us for the action. Wind delays, a controversial appeal, and a rematch. Josh defended his title in a back-to-back win, and our CEO Christopher Tan traded the office for the driver’s seat and walked away with a newfound appreciation for the pros.

The real MVP? Our Operations Team, who safely move more than 26 million pounds of food a year. We couldn’t do what we do without you! 🏆

Thank you to Federal Managers Association, Chapter 3 for including the Foodbank in your first annual golf fundraiser in Portsmouth! ⛳

This gift is especially meaningful because it was presented to our own Mobile Logistics Manager, Tom Jones, who worked with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard team this fall to get emergency boxes and protein to employees working without pay during the government shutdown. ❤️

Thank you, Grocery Outlet! ❤️

We recently celebrated the generosity of our neighbors at Grocery Outlet, whose Independence From Hunger campaign raised over $13,000 for the Foodbank. The campaign ran June 24 to July 31 and marked the company’s 16th annual effort. It was also the first since Grocery Outlet opened its doors in Virginia Beach and Portsmouth this past March. Since then, stores have opened in Suffolk and Chesapeake, and all five locations in our service area chose us as their beneficiary.

Shoppers could round up at the register, purchase a pre-packaged donation bag, or give $5 and receive a $5 coupon for a future shopping trip. Every one of those choices helped put food on tables across our community.

To the customers, store teams, and independent operators who made this possible: thank you for helping us fight food insecurity in our region.

Thank you to Virginia Beach Neptune Festival for featuring a sand sculpture celebrating our new headquarters. Groundbreaking is planned for 2027!

It meant even more that our sculptor, Bogdan Kutsevych, traveled all the way from Ukraine 🇺🇦 to bring this vision to life. Thank you, Bogdan!
