No time for a breather—history is happening right here in Newville!
Mark your calendars for the NHS Annual Meeting on November 19th at 6:00 PM at the Newville TCP First Church of God (475 Shippensburg Rd).
This isn't just your standard annual meeting. While we will handle our official business swiftly—including crucial board elections, a recap of our milestone moments, and the upcoming budget—the real highlight of the evening begins immediately after.
We are thrilled to welcome our extraordinary guest speaker, Colonel (Ret.) Frank R. Hancock!
Colonel Hancock is a true Renaissance man of Central Pennsylvania. You might know him as a local high school basketball referee (24 years) or as a ballroom dance instructor (28 years). But he is also a celebrated military leader and historian. He famously commanded the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during the historic 1991 air assault into Iraq, an extraordinary feat he detailed in his recent book, Operation Desert Storm: How Two Young Intelligent Analysts and an Infantry Battalion Changed the War in Iraq.
Now working with the “Time Travelers Trunk” history company, Colonel Hancock is coming to Newville to connect the global to the local. Come listen as he reveals our area's surprising, vital involvement in the creation of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
The best part? This event is completely FREE and open to both members and the general public!
After the presentation, stick around for light snacks, refreshments, and a chance to mingle. Whether you want to pick the brain of a retired Colonel, chat with local historians, or just talk shop about local history, this is your chance.
Don't miss out! Please hit "Share," invite your friends!

Our Historical Society works for you and we listen to you. With all the hubub about the Parade, this got snuck onto our mailbox today.
A while back we made it our mission to save this bridge. Letters and phone calls along with local and state reps giving their input on our behalf. I personally made a number of calls and posted this on social media. Enjoy this little snippet.

"PennDOT, on behalf of the FHWA, has determined that the SR 3007 bridge can be rehabilitated to meet the project’s new purpose and need while also meeting the SOI Standards. Both rehabilitation alternatives effectively address the purpose and need while preserving its character-defining features of the bridge which contributes to the eligible Big Spring Industrial and Agricultural Historic District. PennDOT is recommending Alternative 1 as it provides a more comprehensive, long-term solution compared to Alternative 2. "

You can read more here on these two links, but I think your NHS is going to take a victory lap on this one. What do you think?

Just a friendly reminder, signs will be going up for no parking on the following streets during the Parade this Monday. Broad, Big
Spring Ave, north on 233 to the light, West on 641 to Zion church. After 5pm on Monday, Hippensteel's Auto will be towing these vehicles. Understand this is a pain, but what if a child runs out into the parade route and cannot be seen because of a car in the way and gets hurt. Plus, we have bands that take up the whole street, who would now have to go out of formation to accommodate. This one day a year, sees Newville swell to almost 4x its population. Please be considerate and do not park on those streets from 5pm to 10pm on Monday Oct 26th. Thank you so much in advance. The team has worked tirelessly to ensure this is even a bigger and better parade than previous years. Please share and again, thank you from the army of volunteers we have for this event.
