April 2026 GWA Tactical Event Recap

The 70th fielded 14 Sappers this weekend at the Spring tactical event in Newville, PA. At our first event just four years ago we had 6 men in the field - since that time our numbers and our role with GWA's Allied Battalion have steadily grown. This past weekend our Sappers stormed the enemy line in Battalion assaults, cut wire, laid down smoke and consolidated positions and formed a mobile reserve used to plug gaps and counterattack as the tactical scenarios played out. True to our RE Field Company impression, between combat roles we built trench block entanglements for the front line and bayonet dummy stands for behind the line training.

We had a great event with 11 members in the field. There was a great combat role for us this past weekend so we were only able to work on a few field projects, such as finishing the CAMC shed and building a number of personal trench periscopes. A great time was had by all!

Getting ready for the fall tactical event this coming November, the Sappers of the 70th are making preparations - these include finalizing our trench periscope design and continuing construction of the Canadian Army Medical Corps -CAMC- storage shed adjacent to the field hospital site. If you are interested in trying out the Sappers at Newville, now is an excellent time to get in touch.

Great spring event with the 70th at Newville--as always. We made some great headway on a shed project that's been in the works for some time and got plenty of time in the trenches and on tactical maneuvers.

A great weekend "traveling" back to early 1915 at GWA Newville for the Winter 1914-15 Immersion event. Four Sappers from the 70th took part also ng with mbers of other Commonwealth units patrolling, defensive works construction and bartering with the local "French inhabitants" - good times had by all. Many thanks to the 42nd BN R.H.C. for their hospitality!
