VFW Post 406 is located in Newport, Rhode Island, and is one of the oldest posts in the country - formed shortly after the end of World War I.

Our members consist of retired military, actively serving military, and veterans. All uses of the name and/or emblem of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is authorized by issuance of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States National Headquarters.

Newport Elks Lodge 104 held a solemn and heartfelt POW/MIA Ceremony, honoring the sacrifices of prisoners of war and those missing in action. The event, with strong participation by VFW Post 406 and attended by veterans, community members, and Elks leadership, served as a powerful reminder of those who have not returned home.

The ceremony was led by Elks Exalted Ruler Walt Wildemann and Elks Veterans Committee Chair and VFW Post 406 Member Kevin Callahan, who together performed the duties of Master of Ceremonies. The centerpiece of the ceremony was the symbolic POW/MIA table, meticulously set with meaningful items, each representing an aspect of loss, sacrifice, and hope. A white tablecloth symbolized purity of intention, an empty chair represented the missing, a single red rose honored the blood shed in sacrifice, a slice of lemon served as a reminder of their bitter fate, grains of salt represented countless tears of the families, and an inverted w**e glass reminds us that they cannot join us in a toast, but we shall toast to them.

The joint commitment of the Elks and VFW to honoring veterans and their families was on full display today. This ceremony serves as a continued promise to keep the memory of POWs and MIAs alive, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Today, on POW/MIA Recognition Day, we pause to honor those who have sacrificed so much, and remember that our brothers and sisters have not all returned home. Please take a moment to read the attached letter from VFW Post 406 Commander Anselm Richards.

Additionally, we strongly encourage all Post 406 members to attend the POW/MIA ceremony hosted by Elks Lodge 104 this Sunday, September 20. Assembly time is at 1115, and the ceremony will begin at 1200 at the Newport Elks Lodge. The uniform for this event is Blue Blazer, Khakis, Post crest, VFW Cover, and Post tie. Please make every effort to attend in support of this event!

On Friday, VFW Post 406 had the incredible honor of partnering with U.S. Coast Guard Station Castle Hill to host teens from Gold Star Sailing. It was a beautiful day dedicated to community, support, and remembrance, made even better by a generous pizza dinner provided by O'Brien's Pub here in Newport!

The campers were treated to an unforgettable experience when a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod came in for a landing right in front of the assembled group. Afterward, Coast Guardsmen escorted the group for a special viewing of the iconic Castle Hill Lighthouse.

We were also honored to have Newport Mayor Charlie Holder in attendance to pass out City of Newport challenge coins to the campers! To cap off the inspiring day, VFW Post 406 Member and Post Chaplain, CPT Sharon McGinnis (US Army, Veteran), offered a heartfelt blessing for everyone in attendance.

A massive thank you to the US Coast Guard, Mayor Holder, Gold Star Sailing, O'Brien's Pub, and all of our dedicated VFW members who helped make this day one to remember. 🇺🇸⭐⚓️🚁🍕

Honoring those who serve! 🇺🇸

VFW Post 406 showed up in force at the Newport Gulls Military Appreciation Night at Cardines Field. From guiding guests into the stands to hosting the 50/50 raffle, it was an incredible evening of community and gratitude. We are especially proud that all proceeds from our 50/50 raffle were donated to the wonderful team at Gold Star Sailing. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our military members and their families! ⚾️

🇺🇸 Keep the Independence Week celebrations going! Join VFW Post 406 this Sunday, July 5th, for Veterans Appreciation Day at Fort Adams State Park.

We’re partnering with the Fort Adams Trust and the Newport Historical Society for a special evening honoring our veterans. At 6:00 PM, the Navy Band Northeast Trident Brass Quintet will be performing live! 🎺

Make a whole day out of it: The fort will also serve as a state hosting site for America’s Potluck Day. Rather than a potluck, visitors are invited to bring a picnic, blanket or chair and enjoy the waterfront grounds, which open at 9 a.m. Plus, all veterans and active-duty service members get free self-guided and guided tours of the fort all day (use promo code JULY5VET online). https://fortadams.org/book-a-tour/

VFW Post 406 Members still serving!

Recently, VFW Post 406's own Sharon Twaddle McGinnis, a former US Army Captain and proud veteran of the 82nd Airborne, traveled to Michigan to play at the American Dunes Golf Club. Sharon participated in a Veterans Golf Association (VGA) morning outing, fulfilling a vow she made after meeting Lt. Col. Dan Rooney last summer.

The American Dunes team highlighted Sharon in their weekly "Mission Brief," recognizing her dedicated military service, which included stations at Fort Hood and Fort Bragg, and a deployment to Bosnia. They also gave a fantastic shoutout to the work she continues to do back home in Newport, supporting veterans through VFW Post 406 and honoring Gold Star Families via her involvement with Gold Star Sailing. We are incredibly proud of Sharon for representing Post 406 across the country!
