Exciting update: the newly restored John La Farge windows have returned to the sanctuary, courtesy of Cynthia Welton of Welton/O'Neill Studio and were installed today! Missing elements comprised of cathedral glass (rippled clear glass), opalescent glass and antique glass were painstakingly researched and replicated. The jewels in the flowers are made from hand-blown glass, referred to as antique glass and really capture the light with a magical quality. The amber color is from the UK and isn't made anymore, but thankfully Cynthia had a stash in her studio. Julie Sloan, of Consultants in Stained Glass, who has carefully researched and advised on the restoration of the windows, was on hand, as well as LFRF Board chair, Paul Miller, with others stopping by to lend their support.

Detail from an 1880 John La Farge designed opalescent glass window found in the south aisle of the Newport Congregational Church. Notice the pattern of squares and flowers, a modern design for the era, made from more opaque glass to capture the light from the southern exposure. Opalescent glass, patented by La Farge, inspired a revival of architectural stained glass that would influence artists such as Louis Comfort Tiffany.
