This week our Rotary club welcomed Ryan Sterling, who shared how Newport Sailing is helping local youth and adults discover the joy of sailing through lessons, rentals, community partnerships, and accessible programs on the lake. Alongside him was Randy McGunnigle, the founder of Newport Sailing who shared his hopes for the future of Newport, which includes recreation becoming the heart of the community.

We pause to honor the veterans who have helped shape both our club and our community this weekend.
Among them was “Lindy” Palin a World War II B-17 pilot, community leader, devoted Rotarian, and namesake of our beloved annual Flyover Ping-Pong Drop. After serving our country overseas, Lindy returned home and continued a lifetime of service right here in the Northeast Kingdom through Rotary and countless community efforts.
Today, we remember and thank all of the veterans who have been part of the Newport Rotary family through the decades; individuals who carried the Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self” both in uniform and in civilian life.
Their legacy continues in every scholarship awarded, every community project completed, every flag raised, and every neighbor helped.
To all veterans past and present: thank you for your service, your leadership, and your example.

The Rotary Club of Newport was proud to spend our monthly service day at beautiful Pomerleau Park for our annual spring cleanup! From weeding and mulching to planting new Russian sage, it was a wonderful day of service in one of Newport’s most special community spaces.

This is a special place for our club with our original investment in its making. Each year we honor the chance to support this botanical garden in the heart of Newport’s Railroad Square. We are especially excited to see our serviceberry trees beginning to thrive here too!

A huge thank you to our friend Robert Gosselin, whose dedication to Newport helps make our city bloom. From the stunning gardens to the vibrant potted plants throughout downtown, Robert’s care and vision make Newport shine in every season. We are grateful to play a small role in supporting his incredible work and helping keep Newport blossoming for all to enjoy.

At just 13 years old, Harlow Converse is proving that one person really can make a difference.
The NCUJHS student noticed turtles being hit along local roadways as traffic speeds increased near nesting areas. Instead of just being sad about it, she took action.
Harlow gathered data, contacted the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife, presented to the Derby Selectboard, worked with her 4-H group, and created turtle crossing signs to help protect nesting turtles near Lake Memphremagog and North Derby.
This story hit strong for us at The Rotary Club of Newport, and we decided to fund all her signs! Those signs are now up and helping, thanks to Harlow who is literally climbing the ladder to make change happen!
Female turtles can take 10–17 years before reproducing, so saving even one turtle can help protect generations to come.
We are incredibly proud to support young leaders like Harlow who see a problem and do something about it. Not to mention she is the granddaughter of cherished Rotarian David Converse, who has been with our Club almost longer than any other member.
We think she just may have learned some of this, “service above self,” from him!

In a small community, we truly see what service looks like.
This week, the Rotary Club of Newport would like to recognize and thank two groups of everyday heroes who help keep our community safe, healthy, and strong: our nurses and our firefighters.
To the nurses serving in our local hospitals, clinics, schools, long-term care facilities, home health programs, and beyond: thank you for the compassion and care you provide to our neighbors every day. You often meet people in their most vulnerable moments, and your dedication makes a lasting difference.
To our firefighters: both career and volunteer, thank you for answering the call at all hours, protecting our homes and businesses, responding in emergencies, and serving with courage and commitment. In small towns especially, your willingness to step up means everything.
In communities like the NEK, these aren’t strangers; we know you as neighbors, friends, family members, coaches, volunteers, and fellow community leaders. Thank you for all you do, both seen and unseen.
Please join us in showing appreciation to the nurses and firefighters who serve our community and communities everywhere. We are grateful for you this week and every week.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to educators far and wide! This week, we celebrate those who teach our very youngest learners and early childhood classrooms, those guiding students through elementary, middle, and high school, educators in alternative programs who meet learners where they are, and professors and instructors shaping futures at our local community colleges.
We also want to recognize retired teachers who may remember this week fondly, your impact didn’t end when you left the classroom. The lessons you taught, the encouragement you gave, and the lives you shaped continue to ripple outward every day.
Our Rotary Club is especially grateful because we know firsthand the heart of educators! We’re proud to have many former teachers among our members, including PE teachers, band directors, English teachers, French teachers, and more.
To every educator past and present: thank you for your patience, creativity, resilience, and dedication. Your work matters, and our communities are stronger because of you. ❤️
