Four months ago, to date on May 21st, “Age Reimagined,” produced for AFAR by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions and presented by the Global Coalition on Aging (GCOA), launched. AFAR is proud to be part of this global content series.

View from AFAR: Here’s to 45 —and Beyond

AFAR celebrates its forty-fifth year in 2026, and I just marked my forty-sixth. Both milestones bring new questions about what it means to grow older and whether the years ahead can be healthier, more active, and more fulfilling than the ones before.

As a geroscientist, those questions have guided my career. Early on, an AFAR grant gave me the opportunity to pursue research at a pivotal moment, when geroscience was just beginning to gain traction. The idea that we could target the biology of aging itself, instead of treating one age-related disease at a time, was still emerging, but it was already changing how many of us thought about medicine.

Today, we know that by understanding and addressing the biological drivers of aging, we have the potential to extend the years of life spent healthy, independent, and thriving.

That possibility is what continues to motivate my work. As Executive Director of the XPRIZE Healthspan competition, I have the opportunity to bring together scientists, students, clinicians, entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors to accelerate the development and validation of interventions that have the potential to make healthy aging possible for everyone.

AFAR is a key partner in this work: we're collaborating directly with AFAR on a scientific grant program that will define what meaningful 10-, 15-, and 20-year improvements in healthspan actually look like — the very thresholds our grand prize will be judged against.

Progress like this doesn't happen overnight. Every breakthrough builds on years, often decades of research, sustained investment, and organizations willing to support bold ideas long before they become widely accepted.

AFAR has spent the past 45 years doing exactly that. I'm proud to be among the nearly 5,000 aging researchers whose careers were shaped by its early support, and I'm grateful that investment helped put me on the path to leading efforts like XPRIZE Healthspan today.

Justice, PhD, is the Executive Vice President of the Health Domain at XPRIZE Foundation and Adjunct Professor in Internal Medicine, Section on Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Justice received AFAR’s Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowships in Aging Research in 2016 and the Vincent Cristofalo Rising Star Award in Aging Research in 2022. Additionally, she helped launch AFAR’s FAST (Finding Aging biomarkers by Searching existing Trials) Initiative in 2022, now a program supported by the federal Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health’s (ARPA-H) PROactive Solutions for Prolonging Resilience (PROSPR) program. View from AFAR: Aging in Office

At the time of this writing, 84-year-old Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has been absent from the Senate for six weeks due to complications from a fall at home.

His absence has revived a familiar round of stories, each one trolling for the precise age at which elected officials should surrender their responsibilities. It’s an easy trap. Fixating on an age limit ignores how many older adults are redefining work and contributing to society well past their “prime.”

Consider Robert Greenberg, CEO of Skechers at 85, leading the world’s third-largest footwear company to nearly $10 billion in revenue, or Madonna leading the FIFA World Cup halftime show at 67, or Mel Brooks producing, co-writing and starring in the sequel to the 1980s cult classic, Spaceballs, at the age of 100.

Each of these leaders is still at the top of their game. None has a defined expiration date.

Yet U.S. Senators like Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Angus King (I-ME) and 30 others over the age of 70 are still scrutinized for their age, even as they maintain a deep base of support and move policy for their constituents. When Ronald Reagan became the first-ever 70-year-old president, about 25 million Americans were over the age of 65. Today, that number has more than doubled. There are currently more Americans over 65 than under 15. The age demographics of the U.S. have changed dramatically, so why shouldn’t that be reflected in our leaders across business, entertainment, and politics?

As age dominates the headlines, it is worth asking if chronological age is a legitimate measure of one’s capabilities. In fact, people age differently. Some run marathons in their 80s; others write their best books, direct Fortune 500 companies or serve in the Senate. Some face physical and cognitive decline – even at younger ages. Science – not a number – is how we tell the difference between age that gets in the way and age that does not. It depends on the person.

Aging research and geroscience already offer a deep body of work on how chronological and biological age diverge. New methods for measuring biomarkers of aging are making it possible to assess health and function with more precision. Therapeutic advances hold real promise for shortening the years we spend in poor health.

As populations around the world age, we must ensure more of us can stay in good health and keep contributing for longer. The key is science. Investing in aging research is vital to helping us all have the stamina to continue to work, whether our office is on Capitol Hill, the building next door, or a desk at home.
