Maharat

Maharat Maharat is the first yeshiva to ordain women to serve as Orthodox clergy and was founded in 2009.

As the first yeshiva to ordain women as Orthodox clergy, we strive to offer an exceptional education in Jewish law and pastoral counseling, preparing our graduates to inspire and lead Orthodox communities. By providing a credentialed pathway for women to serve as spiritual and halakhic guides, we increase the community’s ability to attract the best and brightest into the ranks of its leadership. In addition, by expanding the leadership to include women we seek to enliven the community at large, with a wider array of voices, thoughts, and perspectives.

A note on the 3rd anniversary of October 7th from Rabba Sara Hurwitz:
A week after October 7th, I flew to Israel to be with my students. What I remember most is the silence. The streets of Tel Aviv, a city that never stops talking, were eerily quiet. I spent most of that trip just listening.

Three years later, there is so much noise: people disagreeing. Sounds of wailing and mourning. And even sounds of dancing again. Just days ago we danced with the Torah, and we remembered. Our tradition has never asked us to choose between the sounds of grief and the sounds of life.

When the foundation of the Second Temple was laid, Ezra tells us, the elders who remembered the first Beit Hamikdash wept aloud, while others shouted for joy. No one could tell the sound of weeping from the sound of joy, and the noise was heard from far away (Ezra 3:12-13).

The silence I heard in Tel Aviv was the silence of shock. The noise we hear now, even the painful parts, even the arguing, is the sound of a people that is still alive and still building. Weeping and rejoicing, all at once, heard from far away.

May we be builders who can hold all of that sound, for our people and for one another.
