centromaria.ny.residenc Santa Vincenta Maria López y Vicuña.

She was born in Cascante (Navarra) on 22nd March 1847. Her parents lived a committed Christian life which guided the life of their daughter. Vincenta Maria was 10 years old when she left home to live with her relatives in Madrid; there she dedicated herself to studying (French, Music, Art...) and at the same time to assist her Aunt and Uncle in works of Charity. So Vincenta learnt how to love and

serve in a new way, especially in favour of young
domestic workers. This work of guiding, helping and promoting the welfare of youth was her ideal for Vincenta Maria knew the ‘real’ women’s world. In her heart there was space for God, to follow the call of Jesus to evangelize. Vicenta Maria always wanted to be a Religious sister but she could not decide whether to join another Congregation or to start one of her own to continue the work that she was doing with the young girls. In 1868 she went for a spiritual retreat for eight days, during which she decided ‘The girls have won’. She would dedicate her life to serving the young domestic workers in need. So she founded a new congregation that started with three nuns. They opened different houses around Spain at the service of young girls and prepared a small number of Religious to go in the world to carry on serving the needs of young working girls. In 1975 she was canonised by Pope Paul VI and in 1989, on the threshold of the Centenary of her death she was named ‘Patroness of the working youth’ in Peru. Today the Religious of Mary Immaculate continue her work in 21 countries around the world.
