Everyone talks about the first goodbye. Nobody prepares you for the second one.
Here's what I mean: mid-deployment, they get R&R — a couple of weeks home. You count down to it like a holiday. And then, just as the house feels whole again, just as the kids stop flinching at the door, it's time to take them back to the airport and do the entire goodbye over. Except this time you know exactly what you're losing, because you just had it back for fourteen days.
Here's what this means for us: if the second goodbye wrecked you harder than the first, you are not weak and you are not ungrateful for the time you got. It's the contrast that hurts — going from "here" to "gone" in one car ride. Give yourself the same grace after R&R that you gave yourself on day one of the deployment. Reset the countdown. Lean on your people.
And if the reset feels impossible, Military OneSource is free, confidential, and open 24/7 at 1-800-342-9647.
