“I did not think it was necessary for me to go for screening because I did not feel sick.”

For Nyirakamana Pascasie, a resident of Bugesera District, that changed when screening services came to her village.

Because she did not have to travel far to a health facility, Pascasie decided to get screened. She was diagnosed with hypertension and referred to Nyamata Health Center, where she now receives treatment and follow-up care.

Today, she takes her medication as prescribed and follows the advice of health workers to manage her condition.

Her experience is a reminder that bringing screening closer to communities can make it easier for people to know their health status and, when a condition is identified, connect them to the care they need.

Closer to people. Closer to care.

For many people living with hypertension or diabetes, the first barrier to care is not necessarily the absence of treatment. It may be something much earlier: not knowing that they need it in the first place.

That is why access starts with bringing screening closer to where people live.

Through our NCD work, Health Builders is supporting Community Health Workers with the training, equipment, and digital tools they need to provide screening in their communities and connect people to health facilities for continued care.

So far, more than 8,000 CHWs have been trained, 1,800+ screening kits distributed, and 300,000+ people screened for hypertension and diabetes across the districts where this work has been implemented.

Because access is not only about having health care available. It is about making it easier for people to reach, use, and continue receiving the care they need.

Health Builders joins Rwanda’s first National Dialogue on NCDs 2026.

As the Global Week for Action on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) comes to a close, Health Builders joined partners and stakeholders in Kigali today for the first National Dialogue on NCDs 2026, organized by the Rwanda NCD Alliance in collaboration with Rwanda Biomedical Center.

Held under the theme “Leadership in Focus: From Commitments to Delivery: Advancing Multi-Sectoral Accountability and Sustainable Financing for NCDs in Rwanda,” the dialogue brought together government leaders, development partners, patient advocates, academia, and civil society to discuss how Rwanda can strengthen its response to NCDs.

The dialogue is focused on advancing domestic health financing for NCDs and informing the upcoming Rwanda National NCD Strategy and Costed Action Plan (2026–2030).

At Health Builders, we are committed to supporting Rwanda’s efforts to strengthen primary healthcare and improve the prevention, early detection, and management of NCDs, particularly at the community level.

As Global Week for Action on NCDs concludes, we remain committed to working together to turn commitments into meaningful, lasting results for communities across Rwanda.

Sometimes, a routine screening can change everything.

When a community health worker visited 68-year-old farmer Innocent Kabera at his home in Nyabihu District, they discovered his blood pressure was dangerously high.

That screening set off a chain of referrals that ultimately led doctors to identify early warning signs of a stroke-and provide life-saving surgery.

Today, Innocent is recovering and continuing to manage his condition at his local health center.

His story is a powerful reminder that access to healthcare isn’t just about having a facility nearby. It’s about having the people, tools, systems, and connections in place to identify health risks early and make sure patients don’t fall through the cracks.

What does it take to build a stronger response to non-communicable diseases?

It takes more than screening. It takes a health system that can connect people to care, equip healthcare workers with the right tools, and ensure patients receive quality treatment over time.

At Health Builders, we are working to strengthen NCD care around three interconnected pillars: Access, Quality, and Sustainability.
And the results are encouraging:

📈 56% of patients supported have their blood pressure under control, compared with 41% nationally.
📈 61% have controlled blood sugar, compared with 35% nationally.
👩🏾‍⚕️ More than 8,000 community health workers have been trained in hypertension and diabetes screening and reporting.
🩺 More than 300,000 screenings have been conducted across the districts where we work.

These numbers show what is possible when communities, healthcare workers, digital tools, and health systems work together.

Numbers can tell a story. Ours tell a story of lives reached, conditions detected, and care made possible.

We recently updated our Impact Highlights page, and three numbers in particular caught our attention. Each represents thousands of moments when access to the right tools and care made a meaningful difference:

1. 164,425 ultrasound scans for expectant mothers:
164,425 opportunities to monitor pregnancies, reassure mothers, and help clinicians identify complications early.

2. 50,000 people with hypertension detected and enrolled in treatment:
50,000 people who were identified, started on treatment, and connected to follow-up care, turning early detection into an opportunity for better health outcomes.

3. 6,257 high-risk pregnancies identified and referred for life-saving care:
6,257 mothers and their babies identified as being at risk and connected to the specialized care they needed.

These numbers reflect what is possible when timely detection, appropriate technology, and quality healthcare come together.

Behind every hepatitis statistic is a person, a parent, a neighbor, a friend, and a family whose life can be changed by timely prevention, testing, and care.

The good news is that this viral hepatitis is preventable, treatable, and, in many cases, curable. But this is only possible when communities have the knowledge, services, and support they need.
At Health Builders, we are strengthening primary healthcare systems across Rwanda by improving health infrastructure, training frontline health workers, and empowering communities with health education.

Through our partnerships with local health centers, more families can access quality prevention, screening, and care for hepatitis and other preventable diseases.

Better care begins in the community. ❤️

Every day, Community Health Workers walk alongside families, monitoring pregnancies, checking on children, supporting people living with chronic conditions, and connecting communities to essential healthcare services.

By replacing paper records with digital tools and strengthening Community Health Workers' clinical skills, we're helping ensure that care is more timely, health information is more accurate, and patients receive the follow-up they need.

It's another step toward a stronger, more resilient health system one where innovation supports the people making a difference every day.

"Healthcare has always been an important part of our family's story... Over time, these connections and conversations inspired us to support the health system strengthening in Rwanda, a country that feels like a second home to us." — Al Pace
Some partnerships don't just build health facilities; they help build stronger health systems.

For years, Al Pace and Kristin Morch have supported Health Builders in expanding access to quality healthcare across Rwanda. Their generous support has made it possible to construct five health centers and three health posts, bringing quality healthcare closer to thousands of people and helping strengthen Rwanda's health system.

Their latest support for the expansion of Muyumbu Health Center will strengthen maternal and primary healthcare services for more than 60,000 people. The project includes a new maternity block, an operating theatre for emergency obstetric care, dedicated postnatal care rooms, and upgraded clinical infrastructure to support safer deliveries and healthier communities.

We are deeply grateful to Al Pace, Kristin Morch, and the Pace Family Foundation for their longstanding partnership and unwavering commitment to strengthening healthcare in Rwanda.
