It is with both gratitude and sadness that we share that after over 30 years, Books for Kids is closing its doors.

Like many small nonprofits, finding the sustainable funding we need to carry out our mission has been challenging, especially since COVID began.

Our Board of Directors has come to the tough conclusion that we are no longer financially able to continue operations and while difficult, must say goodbye to our students, our staff, and to all of you who have cared so deeply for this organization and mission.

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the loss of former BFK board member Walter Larkin. His dedication to New Yorkers was inspiring, and during his years of philanthropic efforts he worked to improve the lives of his neighbors, championing both early childhood education and increasing quality of life for seniors. As we say goodbye, we thank him for leaving behind this legacy of generosity.

We hope you'll join us in NYC on May 1st for "Books Are Magic!" our 2023 Spring Gala. The essential literacy-building resources and services we provide for our students make it possible to begin to rewrite the story of what it's like to grow up as a child in the United States. We are up against educational inequalities which cannot continue, but with your help we can build a better future for our students and for us all.

Today is World Water Day, a UN observance that since 1993 has been part of raising awareness about issues of justice regarding our world's water... What does that have to do with early education and literacy? A lot!

Helping children build their foundational literacy skills doesn't only help them learn to read. It connects them with other people and the planet they call home. Books for young readers about water and the environment plant seeds of curiosity that inspire further learning, creating pathways for them to follow that lead to passions and professions.

We fill our libraries with high-quality books about a wide variety of subject matter. When kids find books on the shelves that inspire them, their reading confidence and excitement grows, and their futures open up wide.

What are some of your favorite books about water? What about books that cultivate empathy and curiosity about the world? Let us know below!

Our students love books about cities and all the places they visit and live (they also love books about transportation and how we get from place to place).

All children, no matter where they’re from, deserve the joyful and educational experiences that come from having access to books and libraries.

Today on World Day of Social Justice, we are reminded that alongside large-scale systemic changes, small acts of kindness can help us create the world we want to see.

Please consider making a gift of books and helping us . Literacy is a powerful tool for reducing inequality. But for millions of children, the road to literacy is one filled with obstacles. All kids deserve access to books and libraries that will help them learn and thrive.

Our Mobile Library program provides carts that bring lending and Story Time from classroom to classroom in preschools without space for a full library. Gifts from our Wish List will go directly to PreK students at a school in Brooklyn. https://amzn.to/3Sc5XK3

Honor a loved one this Valentine's Day by sharing the love of reading and the power of books: Help fund our Mobile Library program! Visit www.withkoji.com/ for ways to clear our library book wish list and donate funds.

Our programs are flexible and tailored to each school and center to meet their unique needs. Just as we adapted to an online-model during COVID so that students could continue their literacy education, we know that not every preschool has room for a full-sized library and we must meet the needs of those students too.

Our Mobile Library program will allow us to bring an expertly-curated mini library from classroom to classroom where we can host Story Time and help kids lend books to bring home and share with their families.

“Since the Books for Kids program started I have seen an improvement in the way my students do their read-aloud to their classmates. They try to imitate Ms. Tanya and I am so proud of their efforts to read.” — Brooklyn PreK teacher

One of the core tenets of our programs is that reading aloud is a transformational experience. That's why we make it a priority to read aloud weekly with PreK students and to provide books that allow families to read together daily at home. During the 21-22 academic year, our Library Specialists read over 3,500 books during group Story Times, and we provided nearly 17,500 books to school, shelter, and home libraries.
When kids have the opportunity to fall in love with reading and learning through increased access to books, and when they receive the reading encouragement and support that all kids deserve, it paves the way for literacy and bright futures.
