As described in Psychoanalytic Terms and Concepts, the concept of enactment (a co-constructed experience between patient and analyst) has been present in the psychoanalytic literature for many years. As a result of the greater influence of object relational, relational, and interpersonal theories it has been given more attention in recent decades. The panelists will discuss their understanding of the concept, its theoretical usefulness, and its applicability in psychoanalytic treatment.

Dear Friends,

We are meeting parents and children to form groups for Fall 2014.

We have written you in the past to highlight common issues that bring new mothers to seek help at Pacella. Below are some common struggles that bring mothers of toddlers to our groups.

- A higher than average level of anxiety about her parenting and her child's well-being.

- Conflicts over aggression: her own and that of her child
. How to handle aggression (or withdrawal) in her child's play with peers
. Feelings of embarrassment with other parents

- Difficulty setting neutral limits

- Separation: sleep training; her toddler's independence

- Feeling of isolation; desiring a community of mothers

Our groups are a helpful complement to a mother's individual treatment.

Listening attentively to our children

May 8, 2014 is National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day.

Anxiety, depression, and behavioral disturbances are all too common in children. Yet, busy pediatricians and other primary care providers can feel easily frustrated by the lack of mental health supports for the children and families in their care.

Not only are mental health clinicians, especially in public clinics, burdened by the sheer numbers of children in need, but, they also face an enormous challenge in trying to develop effective methods to help these children and their families.

In such demanding settings, it is all too easy to forget that THE most important therapeutic ingredient in all situations is LISTENING to the child and family. By careful listening, the clinician can hear the child's story and, in turn, will be able to implement an appropriate therapeutic plan.

On May 8, National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, let us be sure that we listen attentively to our children.
