Harlem Children’s Zone is breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty by building up opportunities for children, families, and communities to thrive in school, work, and life.

10/22/2026

We celebrated five years of by bringing it home to New York City, where our work to end generational poverty and expand opportunity for children and families began. More than 1,000 leaders from 36 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, including 519 first-time attendees, came together, all committed to place-based, cradle-to-career work and creating pathways to social and economic mobility for millions of children and families.

Thank you to HCZ Founder and President for the vision that started it all, to HCZ CEO Kwame Owusu-Kesse for carrying it forward, and to everyone who showed up and those who shared on a panel. Let’s keep moving the work forward. See you in the field!

Our National Geoffrey Canada Leadership Program scholars left with a powerful affirmation: “You are here for a reason.” Throughout the convening, Tarrence, Tymarion, and Nicholas connected with place-based leaders and practitioners from across the country before taking the stage to share their journeys and college experiences. Hear what Rooted in Purpose means to them and how they’re inspired to create change in their communities.
