Velez has gone on to train under the likes of Jacques Torres and Christina Tosi, but her James Beard Award–winning cookbook "Bodega Bakes" is proof that she never forgot her roots, weaving her New York upbringing and Dominican heritage seamlessly into easy, exquisite desserts.
