This summer, a number of talented students joined ADAPT as interns, walking through the halls of our day programs and residences and sharing memorable moments with the people we support. While it was the first time many of our interns had ever heard of ADAPT, for one intern, the experience meant returning to an important part of where her story began. 
 
Years before becoming a Storytelling Intern, Hana Music received support through one of ADAPT’s Community Habilitation programs. For Hana, returning to ADAPT was more than the next step in her career. It was a chance to return to a place that once helped her find her voice- and now use that voice to help tell the stories of others.

On World Cerebral Palsy, we’re celebrating the creativity, individuality, and self-expression of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.
 
Through ADAPT’s Laser Painting Program, individuals with limited mobility can create abstract acrylic paintings using a laser headband or hand adaptation. The laser guides a tracker that follows their movements, allowing a brush to create each stroke on the canvas. From choosing colors and shapes to directing each brushstroke and deciding when the painting is complete, every decision is made by the artist.

On September 24, 2026, ADAPT Community Network celebrated the grand opening of our new Smart Living Center with an Open House and Resource Expo!

Located at our Stillwell Campus in the Bronx, our Smart Living Center is a home-like space designed to help people experience, understand, and explore accessible and home-enabling technologies that support greater independence, safety, and participation in community life.

This new center will connect people with disabilities, families, technology innovators, government, academia, and community partners to explore solutions that advance independence.

The Tipperary International Peace Award has an international reputation for recognizing individuals and organizations who have demonstrated courage and an exceptional commitment to peace, reconciliation and humanitarian work.

Giles Duley is an acclaimed photographer, writer, and CEO of Legacy of War Foundation. He was also proudly honored with the Hausman Humanitarian Award at the 2025 ADAPT Leadership Awards Gala.

On the evening of December 8, 1951, a 15-hour benefit broadcast dedicated to raising awareness and support for New Yorkers with cerebral palsy would mark the first ever Telethon hosted by United Cerebral Palsy of New York City.

Television was still a new medium in 1951 which meant that a 15-hour live broadcast was unusual enough that it represented a very different way of fundraising from the traditional campaigns. By bringing the cause directly into viewers’ homes, UCP of New York City introduced a new way for the public to learn about cerebral palsy and support individuals and families in the community.

The telethon raised more than $275,000 in pledges to support the work of UCP of New York City, marking an important moment in the organization’s history and in the early history of televised fundraising.

Although summer has come to an end, we want to take a moment to share some of the incredible celebrations and adventures that took place at ADAPT over the past few months! ️

🍦Our people supported took a trip down to the Museum of Ice Cream, where they had a sweet time exploring the fun.

🎃 Our Staten Island Day Hab celebrated the end of summer with a Summerween-themed BBQ, bringing participants together for a fun-filled day of food, Halloween-inspired activities, and festive summer spirit.

🧪 Participants at Stillwell donned white lab coats and safety goggles as they explored a variety of hands-on science experiments. They even created an erupting volcano using common household ingredients that produced orange, lava-like foam.

🎾 Johnathan and Selina attended the US Open Wheelchair Tennis Games, sponsored by the Montefiore Adaptive Sports Program. They had the opportunity to meet the athletes and Johnathan even participated in a little friendly volley with them.

🖼️Our Vandalia Residence had a fun-filled summer, visiting the Museum of Natural History, the Aquarium, and Splish Splash.

🎨 Our Stillwell Day Hab Program hosted a Laser Art Exhibition showcasing the incredible artwork from our talented people supported.

This summer, ADAPT’s Theater Group transformed our 5030 Broadway Day Habilitation Program into the magical realm of Oz in their latest original production of Journey Through Oz, the Musical. 🌈👠🦁✨

An original script by our very own Day Habilitation participant, Donald Alexander, the production was written through the lens of disability, celebrating individuality, empowerment, friendship, and joy.

The magic of Journey Through Oz also extended beyond the stage. The ADAPT Theatre Group partnered with Cornell Tech’s MakerLab to explore how technology could help make the process of performing more accessible for the actors themselves, taking this summer’s musical to the next level with the creation of the ADAPT Stage Prompter.
