📣 HAPPY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY 📣

In 2003, Wilma Mankiller spoke to Nashers about her experience as the first woman elected as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. She served for 10 years, dedicating her life to advocating for education, healthcare, housing services and improving Nation-to-Nation relations with the federal U.S. government.

On this day, we celebrate Native people's heritage, moving away from narratives of violence and white supremacy toward education, repair, and advocacy.

Back-to-school is in full swing this fall so we're sharing some special moments from our Nash U cohort from 2019. The Nash U program helps prepare high school seniors with foundational professional leadership skills for college, career, and their unique postsecondary journey. Applications for this year's Nash U Leadership Internship are OPEN now, and applicants have until October 16th, 2026 to apply.

Nashers will be eligible for a $400 stipend at the end of their internship program.

What does it look like to turn silence into action?

In T**i Afolabi's Summer Institute elective course titled "Your Silence Will Not Protect You: Black Feminist Poetry, Politics, and Activism,” Nashers created their own collectives to address problems in their communities, modeled after the Combahee River Collective.

Here’s a sneak peek at the "Black Women’s Community Collective," created to address discrimination and injustice in healthcare by imagining accessible resource centers rooted in dignity and care for Black women.

This summer, Nashers explored poetry, politics, and activism through the elective “Your Silence Will Not Protect You: Black Feminist Poetry, Politics, and Activism,” taught by T**i Afolabi.
Using the Combahee River Collective Manifesto, Nashers explored what it means to reject silence and use imagination to envision stronger, more liberated communities.

💬 “I wanted them to leave the lesson thinking through how this manifesto and collective is a model of what it looks like to use your imagination, racial, gender, or sexual based oppression and exclusion to create a new world – a world they would want to live in.”
