Holocaust survivor Michael Goldman-Gilad was born in Katowice, Poland in 1925. When the war broke out, he and his family fled to Przemyśl, where they were eventually forced to live in the town’s ghetto. In 1943, Michael was deported to the Szebnie labor camp and then to Auschwitz and Monowitz (Auschwitz III). His parents and little sister had been sent to the Belżec death camp a year prior. In 1945, Michael managed to escape a death march and hid with a Polish family before joining the Red Army. He immigrated to Israel in 1949, where he settled in Tel Aviv and joined the Israeli police. Following the arrest of Adolf Eichmann in 1960, Michael was attached as an Investigation Officer to Bureau 06, a special unit set up within the police to gather evidence for the trial. Eichmann, one of the highest ranking SS officers, was in charge of implementing the plan for the “Final Solution.” During the investigation, Michael found a document that specifically referenced the train that transported his family to Belżec. When interviewed about the first time he sat opposite Eichmann at Bureau 06, Michael stated, “When he opened his mouth, I saw the gates of the crematorium.” Adolf Eichmann was found guilty and sentenced to death , December 15, 1961.

Holocaust survivor Abraham Korisky with his granddaughter Dana Carmiel after giving evidence in the trial of Bruno D., a former SS guard at the Stutthof concentration camp. Korisky travelled all the way from Israel to testify in a German court against the N**i war criminal, who has been charged with accessory to the murder of 5,230 people. Born in Lithuania, Koriski spent years in the Vilnius Ghetto before being sent to Stutthof in 1944. He was forced to clean the crematorium and later survived a death march in the freezing winter of 1945. Koriski described in detail the horrors and sadistic torture that he and other inmates endured. When asked by the judge why he came so far to testify, Koriski answered: “Not because of the defendant. And not for revenge. I don’t care if he goes to jail or not. I am here to tell the world what happened, so it will be written in history books for future generations. Let them know I don’t forget and don’t forgive, but my revenge is my family sitting here with me. That’s all.”

Henry Foner was born in Berlin, Germany in 1932. He was one of 10,000 Jewish children who escaped the Holocaust on the . From December 1938 until the outbreak of WWII in September 1939, thousands of children found refuge in Great Britain after being evacuated from their homes in N**i-occupied Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. Henry was only 6 years old when his father made the painful, but life-saving decision to send his son away. His father was murdered in Auschwitz in 1942, but his foresight and sacrifice saved the life of his beloved son. Henry vividly remembers the journey to Britain. Gestapo troops stormed into the train car and searched the passengers’ bodies for valuables. After arriving in London on February 3, 1939, Henry was placed on another train to Swansea, Wales, where he was fostered by a Jewish family until the end of the war. He later served in the British Army and received a doctorate in chemistry. In 1968, Henry moved to Jerusalem with his wife Judith and their three children.

Today marks 81 years since the first Kindertransport arrived in Great Britain. ✡️
