We are heartbroken and outraged by reports of the shooting of a father by an ICE agent in Marble Hill, with his five-year-old child reportedly inside the vehicle.

Our hearts are with this family and with every neighbor experiencing fear and uncertainty. No child should witness violence against a parent. No family should fear for their safety in the community they call home.

For nearly 38 years, the Dominican Women’s Development Center (DWDC) has stood alongside immigrant women, children, and families. Today, that commitment is stronger than ever.

We join our community partners in demanding a full, transparent investigation and accountability. Our neighbors’ lives are not disposable. Our children’s safety and our families’ dignity are not negotiable.

We also know that solidarity requires action. This Thursday, October 15, from 3:30–5:00 PM, DWDC in partnership with Hands Off NY, will host a free, bilingual virtual Know Your Rights / Conozca sus Derechos workshop. We encourage our neighbors to participate and share this important resource. Please scan the QR code on the accompanying flyer to register.

Behind every immigration enforcement action is a family, a child, a human story that deserves to be heard.

Today’s People’s Hearings, alongside the Hispanic Federation, gave those stories a voice—and a place in the public record.

To every person who courageously shared their truth: We hear you. We see you. Your stories matter.

Today, October 6, marks 38 years since the Dominican Women’s Development Center was founded.

Thirty-eight years ago, a group of extraordinary women came together with a vision to create a place where women and families in our community could find opportunity, support, and a path forward.

Among DWDC’s early funders was the New York Women’s Foundation, an organization that was itself only about two years old at the time. They believed in the vision of these women and invested in what DWDC could become.

And today, on the very day of our 38th anniversary, the New York Women’s Foundation came to DWDC for a site visit.

The timing could not have felt more meaningful.

A beautiful full-circle moment—and a powerful reminder that the women who planted the seeds 38 years ago created something that continues to grow.

Here’s to honoring where we started and moving boldly toward where we are going.

For 26 years, the Brides’ March has carried the memory of Gladys Ricart through the streets of New York City—and has transformed her story into a call to stand against domestic violence.

This Saturday, September 26, the Dominican Women’s Development Center will be PRESENTE.

We march for Gladys.
We march for the women whose lives were taken by someone they loved.
We march for survivors rebuilding their lives.
We march for the women who are still finding the courage and resources to leave.
And we march so the next generation knows that love should never hurt.

For 38 years, DWDC has stood beside women and families in our community. On Saturday, we continue that journey—in solidarity, in remembrance, and in hope.

At META RD 2036, our Executive Director, Marielys Divanne, stood alongside the President of the Dominican Republic, actress and DWDC Gran Campeona Celines Toribio, and Ydanis Rodríguez, former NYC DOT Commissioner and longtime community advocate.
From Washington Heights to the Dominican Republic, Marielys continues to proudly represent DWDC and the women and families we have served for 38 years.
Our presence in these important spaces reflects the strength of our history, the impact of our work, and our commitment to ensuring that Dominican women and families are seen, heard, and represented.

Some visits carry history—and today’s visit was one of them. 💜

We were honored to welcome Luis A. Miranda Jr. to DWDC, an organization he helped build and champion. He spent the morning connecting with our team, sharing stories, offering thoughtful advice, and imagining what is possible for our next chapter.
Luis reminded us that leadership is not only about what you help create—it is about continuing to show up for it.
